Thursday’s games

Class 5A

Caprock (1-0) vs. Palo Duro (0-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
An Amarillo city rivalry with lots of intrigue. This one was first played in 1963 and this year could be as entertaining as any game in the series history. Can Caprock duplicate its eye-opening 500-plus yards of offense from a week ago? Can Palo Duro shake off the special teams mistakes and loss to Tascosa? … Caprock 31, Palo Duro 21

Class 4A

Clovis N.M. (0-2) at Randall (0-1), 7 p.m. Happy State Bank Stadium
Both teams struggled offensively in losses last week. Randall is still looking for an identity on that side of the ball apart from Nathan Baker. The Raiders will have some momentum that will prevail them to victory in the home opener. … Randall 28, Clovis 7

Class 2A

Guymon, Okla. (0-1) at Booker (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Kiowas are looking for their first 2-0 start since Mr. All-Time Hunter Lile was quarterbacking in 2014. Let’s make it happen. … Booker 27, Guymon 14

Class 1A

Dawson (1-0) vs Darrouzett (0-1), 7:30 p.m. at Kress
This should be a competitive game, but the Longhorns end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. … Dawson 32 Darrouzett 24

Silverton (1-0) at Paducah (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
The Dragons tend to play well at home and can be a handful with their speed.  Look for the Owls to fall in a close one. … Paducah 68 Silverton 62

Friday’s games

Class 5A

Cleveland, N.M (1-1) at Amarillo High (0-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Poetry returns respecting our neighboring state; Cleveland fans kickoff is CDT so don’t be late. AHS took a tumble in week one, Playing Legacy, however, in 2022 for many will be no fun. Cleveland is on a roll winning 22 of its last 23. This includes two NM state titles, impressive, you agree? AHS will play much better at home this week. Tough one to pick with Cleveland on a streak. … Cleveland 31, AHS 28

Tascosa (1-0) vs. Midland Legacy (1-0), 7 p.m., Buffalo Stadium, Canyon
This is a wonderful non-district matchup in a perfect football setting at WT. Legacy proved last week against Amarillo High its offense is legit with stud junior quarterback Marcus Davila. Tascosa has the hosses up front like TCU commit Avion Carter and senior Keevan Ledoux to bring the pressure on Davila. Right now, I see Legacy’s offense ahead of Tascosa’s O and that will be the difference. … Legacy 28, Tascosa 21

– Lance Lahnert
Last week: 3-0 (1.000)
Season: 3-0 (1.000)

Class 4A

Canyon (1-0) at Perryton (1-0), 7 p.m.
Something has to give in this matchup of teams who both scored lopsided victories in their season openers last week. Both teams showed flashes of prolific offenses in going over 40 points each, so the scoreboard operator should be busy. Canyon, though, appears to have more depth and gets the edge. … Canyon 42, Perryton 27

Dumas (0-1) at Lubbock Estacado (1-0), 7 p.m.
Dumas will play another Lubbock school after falling to powerful 5A opponent Lubbock-Cooper to open the season as the Demons couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half. Going for a long road trip will be a challenge, but Dumas is equipped to bounce back. … Dumas 24, Estacado 17

Hereford (0-1) at Wichita Falls (0-1), 7 p.m.
Both of these teams could use a major confidence boost, as they both lost by at least 47 points to open the season. Hereford faces the toughest task with a second straight road trip. It will build some character, but it won’t get the Whitefaces in the win column yet. … Wichita Falls 20, Hereford 19

Plainview (1-0) at Pampa (1-0), 7 p.m.
This should be one of the week’s better games as both teams had impressive season opening victories, with Pampa rallying from a 14-point deficit to beat Big Spring. The Harvesters will enjoy opening at home, but Plainview provides a stout challenge. Homefield gives Pampa a slight edge. … Pampa 21, Plainview 20

River Road (1-0) at Borger (0-1), 7 p.m.
These teams played close games with opposite results to open the season, as River Road surprised Lubbock Roosevelt 15-12 and Borger fell in double overtime at Denver City 21-20. Expect another close game this week, with Borger taking advantage of the home opener to pull it out. … Borger 16, River Road 15

Midland Greenwood (0-1) at West Plains (0-1), 7 p.m.
West Plains christened its football program last week with a lopsided loss to Bushland. The Wolves catch a solid Greenwood team coming to town from a long road trip so this should be more competitive. But the Wolves will have to wait another week for their first win. … Greenwood 35, West Plains 7

– Lee Passmore
Last week: 3-3 (.500)
Season: 3-3 (.500)

Class 3A

Canadian (1-0) at Bushland (1-0), 7 p.m.
This is one of the top non-district matchups in any classifications that will draw the attention of many eyes across the state. Both teams play fast, physical, and are very aggressive on defense. It should be a dandy. … Canadian 35, Bushland 30

Dalhart (0-1) at Sundown (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Golden Wolves will match up very well on the road against the Roughnecks. It will be up to the offense to make plays at crucial points in the game for Dalhart to get the victory. … Dalhart 24, Sundown 13

Muleshoe (0-1) at Lamesa (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Mules want to bounce back after a tough loss in the season opener to Littlefield. … Muleshoe 21, Lamesa 14

Breckenridge (1-0) at Childress (1-0), 7 p.m.
Another week brings another stiff test from a team out of the area for the Childress Bobcats. It’s always hard to pick against the Bobcats at home, especially in the debut of first-year head coach Bo Helm. … Childress 27, Breckenridge 12

Olton (1-0) at Dimmitt (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Bobcats will have their hands full with a Mustang team that is coming off a 49-0 drubbing of Sudan. … Olton 33, Dimmitt 19

Panhandle (1-0) at Friona (0-0), 7 p.m.
Friona had a rare week off to open the year while the Panthers turned heads with a beating of Clarendon. The Chieftains will have the tough task of slowing down QB Landyn Hack. … Panhandle 27, Friona 18

Sanford-Fritch (0-1) at Spearman (0-1), 7 p.m.
A hungry Lynx team is on the prowl after letting one get away at Stratfor last week. … Spearman 34, Sanford-Fritch 16

Tulia (1-0) at Brownfield (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Hornets are buzzing after a Week 1 win, but they’ll get a much tougher opponent Friday night on the South Plains. … Brownfield 38, Tulia 20

Class 2A

Highland Park (0-1) at Boys Ranch (1-0), 7 p.m.
A win for the Roughriders would be their first 2-0 start in 11 years. Though Boys Ranch is riding high off last week’s big victory, the Hornets are much improved. This one could be very competitive. … Boys Ranch 27, Highland Park 21

Vega (1-0) at Farwell (1-0), 7 p.m.
Fans of old school football will love this matchup. These two teams love to lineup and run the football behind physical offensive lines. Give the edge to the Steers and RB Corey Stancell. … Farwell 26, Vega 14

Stratford (1-0) at Sunray (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Elks have owned this rivalry for quite some time now. The Bobcats are a good football team but not quite where they need to be to hang with the defending state champs. … Stratford 42, Sunray 13

West Texas High (1-0) at Shamrock (0-1), 7 p.m.
The Irish looked solid despite a loss to Sundown last week while the Comanches already won more games than all of last year. Shamrock QB Kit Macina will give WT High fits in the end. … Shamrock 35, WT High 18

Gruver (1-0) at Texhoma, Okla. (0-0), 7 p.m.
The Greyhounds stay hot with a win over the Red Devils who are finally opening the season. … Gruver 35, Texhoma 12

Lubbock Trinity Christian (0-1) at Clarendon (0-1), 7 p.m.
Clarendon would like nothing more than to bounce back after a tough loss to Panhandle in Week 1. That won’t be easy against a Trinity team that went toe-to-toe with Albany last week. … Trinity 30, Clarendon 15

Electra (0-1) at Memphis (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Cyclones were a feel-good story coming out of the first week. Let’s see if they can keep the momentum rolling. … Memphis 19, Electra 12

Lubbock Christian (1-0) at Wellington (1-0), 7 p.m.
For the second week in a row the Skyrockets will get tested by a very sound opponent. Lubbock Christian is no joke. … Wellington 19, Lubbock Christian 16

Last week: 8-6 (.571)
Season: 8-6 (.571)

Class 1A

Amarillo PCHEA (0-1) at McLean (1-0), 7 p.m.
Things don’t get easier for PCHEA as the Tigers roar. … McLean 68, PCHEA 12

Claude (1-0) at Hedley (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
Can the Mustangs start the season 2-0?  After a comeback win last week Claude makes it two in a row on the road. … Claude 52, Hedley 27

Lefors (0-1) at Miami (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
Don’t look for the Warriors to get eight interceptions like last week but they will get the win. … Miami 72, Lefors 34

The Swifts are simply the much better team. … Nazareth 52, Hart 6
