Tuesday’s area round UIL Soccer playoffs saw plenty of thrilling action for Texas Panhandle teams.

In the Class 5A boys area round, it took double overtime and penalty kicks, however, Palo Duro survived a scare from El Paso Irvin winning in penalty kicks.

After a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, the Dons (23-1-2) took a 3-2 lead in overtime only to see Irvin tie the contest to force penalty kicks.

During the second round of PK’s Diego Murguia was able to get a shot past the Rockets goalie for the victory. Dons goalie Ivan Flores had four saves during regulation, and two stops during the penalty kick session.

Palo Duro striker Jaime Carillo scored two goals in regulation.

The Amarillo High Sandies saw a solid season come to a disappointing end AHS (16-5-1) gave up a late goal, as El Paso Del Valle forced overtime tied 1-1. Del Valle went on to win in penalty kicks 1-0.

In Class 4A, the Pampa Harvesters stayed red hot having no issues downing San Angelo Lakeview in a 7-1 blowout in Midland. Prolific goal scorer, Justin Martinez, had a career effort netting six goals in the victory. Martinez, who has been stellar all season, has an eye-opening 57 goals on the year. Pampa (19-2-1) will make its first appearance in the regional quarterfinals since 2016.

The girls area playoffs also saw games come down to the wire. Randall is still alive during its amazing playoff push getting a last second goal to beat El Paso Burgess 2-1 at Midland Greenwood. With the game tied in the 80th minute, Randall’s Makenna Alstead found the back of the net off an assist from Maguire Guest for the game-winner with only five seconds to play to lift the Lady Raiders (16-4-1) to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2016. Teammate Kealy Juarez added a first half goal for her third score of the postseason.

Amarillo High is headed back to the third round of the playoffs for a second straight season.

The Lady Sandies held off Canutillo 2-1 at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.

AHS (20-2-2) took an early 1-0 lead on a Nicole Gray goal in the 14th minute. Canutillo tied the contest, 1-1, in the 47th minute, before the Lady Sandies took the advantage over for good on a Lilly Cook score off an assist from Tatyana Gaspar in the 79th minute. AHS goalkeepers Ellery Craighead and Kloie Mills did the job in net.

In Class 4A, Canyon had a flair for the dramatics as well pulling off a 3-2 overtime win against Snyder at Frenship.

The Lady Eagles battled to force overtime

2-2. In the OT session, Canyon’s Bryleigh Burks scored on assist from Gracie Van Winkle to get the win, and soar the Lady Eagles (16-8-1) into the regional quarterfinals for a second straight year.
