Like they have all season, the Eagles dominated the competition scoring 40 points to win by 67 points over second place La Feria (107 points).
“I’m super proud of these guys,” Canyon head coach Wes Kirton said. “They put in the work since the summer started to be where they are now. They’ve been disciplined and it showed during the race. I love that we’ve had the strength of having four to five guys that can all run together and push each other to make each other better. This is just an incredible moment for us.”
The Eagles placed four runners in the top 15 led by Alec Neimiec who placed fourth overall with a 5K time of 16:15.5. Teammate Lathan Lewter followed in seventh place running a 16:17.3, Ryan Fernandez came in 12th clocking a 16:28, and Tristan Cano was 15th with a 16:33.6.
This is the first state championship for the Eagles in over 20 years.
Brown was in third coming down the final stretch and in the final 30 meters, Brown was able to push herself and pull away from Taylor Grona of Fredericksburg and Jetzibe Trevino of Huffman Hargrave to get the victory with a 2-mile time of 11:36.6.
“It was very exciting,” Brown said. “I really wanted us to get the team title, but track is coming in the spring, and I can’t wait to try and win a team title then. Personally, I was shocked to win. I was down the entire race and even in the last 20 meters or so. I just gave it all I had and left it out there. This is a huge accomplishment.”
The Canyon girls finished fourth as a team overall with teammate Abree Winfrey earning All-State honors for a fourth straight year. The senior placed seventh overall on Friday running at time of 11:54.6.
The Randall Lady Raiders found the podium placing third overall as a team to lead all Texas Panhandle teams in Class 4A. Hailey Robertson led Randall finishing 16th overall clocking a 12:17.8, followed by Sadie Sanchez who was 17th running a 12:18.3. Both Robertson and Sanchez earned All-State honors. Dumas, the Region I-4A champion, placed eighth as a team.
Class 2A
Gruver girls get on medal stand
The Gruver Lady Hounds highlighted the UIL Class 2A state meet by earning a silver medal as a team with a second-place overall finish on Friday.
Senior and Oklahoma State basketball commit Brenna Butler led the Lady Hounds placing in the top 20 running a 2-mile race of 13:21.9. Farwell’s Isabella Jaime was very impressive earning All-State honors placing fifth individually with a 12:49.4. The Panhandle girls took seventh overall.
On the boys side, no teams medaled, however, Memphis runner Ryder Robinson led all Texas Panhandle runners taking 21st place running a 18:14.7.

TAPPS Class 2A
Ascension Academy makes a splash at state
Ascension Academy had an excellent showing at the TAPPS Class 2A State Cross Country Meet at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco on Monday.
The Lady Cardinals missed winning a state championship by one point scoring 69 points to state champion Providence Classical, which had 68 points. Senior Abigayle Stubby-Kern ran solid for Ascension earning a bronze medal with a time of 12:41. Teammate and freshman Kathleen Bartley followed in sixth place running a 13:03.6.
The Ascension boys took third overall as a team with 81 points. Senior Braiden McCain placed eighth with a time of 18:17.7. Freshman Owen Chow was 11th clocking a 18:40.2 and junior Wesley Brandt took 15th pacing a 19:14.18.
