Top 10 Texas Panhandle football performers from Week 7

Kameron Brown, Palo Duro, RB-LB, Sr.

Brown and the Palo Duro Dons absolutely dismantled Lubbock High with their most convincing win of the season, 70-0. Brown was spectacular on the defensive side of the football as he terrorized Lubbock quarterback Ivan McGwier with three sacks in the first half. He also ran for two touchdowns on 39 yards rushing, but his biggest play came when stormed through and blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by Yael Ontiveros, scooped it up himself and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

Benson Martinez, Pampa, LB, Jr.

The Pampa junior put on one of the best performances of the season as the Harvesters won their District 3-4A Division I opener 53-20 at Hereford. Martinez was in on 20 total tackles, 12 of those solo, nine for a loss, and had three sacks.

Treshun Wilson, Tascosa, RB, Jr.

Wilson did his job keeping Tascosa perfect in District 2-5A Division I. Though the 21-10 victory against struggling Lubbock Monterey was closer than many anticipated Wilson was a force chewing up 136 yards on 21 carries.

Camren Cavalier, Canadian, QB, Jr.

Cavalier and the Canadian offense is clicking at the right time going over the 50-point mark for a third straight game. The Wildcats used a 42-7 second half to down rival Childress and it was the junior doing it with his legs and his arm that made a big difference. Cavalier went 10-of-17 for 229 yards with two touchdown passes, and had 23 totes for 211 yards for five TDs, combining for seven touchdowns on the night.

Bryce Braden, Stratford, QB-LB, Soph.

The sophomore two-way standout continues to get better each and every week. Braden really turned heads during the No. 5-ranked Elks’ 40-7 rout of Farwell to open District 1-2A Division I play on Friday night. Offensively, Braden threw for 175 yards, tacking on 105 rushing yards with five total touchdowns. On the defensive side, the linebacker made 14 tackles.

Mason Gilbert, Randall, LB, Sr. 

Gilbert returned from injury after missing three games and made his presence felt in an immediate way. Gilbert and the Randall defense shut down Dumas during a 17-13 victory snapping the Demons very impressive 19-game district win streak over the past four years. Gilbert played like a leader of the defense making nine tackles.

Wellington’s defense

It was a total team effort for the No. 3-ranked Wellington Skyrockets who earned a 36-0 shutout of rival Shamrock. Wellington’s defense held a very good Irish offense to under 100 yards of offense and one first down in the first half. On the year, the Skyrockets are allowing less than nine points a game.

Brayden Freeman, Sanford-Fritch, RB-DB, Jr.

Sanford-Fritch broke into the win column for the first time all year beating rival West Texas High in a district opener 28-26. Freeman made sure the victory was going to happen carrying the ball only 11 times for 199 yards, averaging 18.1 yards a carry, with three touchdowns. Freeman also made an interception on defense.

Jose Silerio, Vega, RB, Jr. 

Silerio was speedy, shifty, and flat out unstoppable for Vega as the Longhorns knocked off Oldham County rival Boys Ranch for an 10th straight year, 28-6, on Thursday. Silerio finished the night with three touchdowns on 130 yards rushing.

Austin Valle, Memphis, RB, Sr.

Memphis is off to a very important 1-0 start in District 2-2A Division II getting past Quanah 26-14. Valle was a key cog in the victory for the Cyclones tearing through the Indians defense for 167 yards on 27 carries with three TDS.
