He maybe on his way to play football for the University of Texas, however, Spearman’s Brenen Thompson is wanting to leave one lasting memory for Texas Panhandle fans on the track.

Thompson, who will head to his future school on May 12 for the UIL Class 3A state meet, was the talk of the Region I-3A Track and Field meet at Abilene Christian University by showing off his incredible speed that landed the senior two new meet records.

Thompson broke his own meet record he set last year during Friday’s prelims when he made a 10.22 in the 100 meter dash look easy.

Thompson followed that up with another huge Saturday. Thompson won the 100 meter dash with an impressive 10.29, then broke the meet record in the 200 meter with an eye-opening 21.00. The previous record held by Panhandle graduate, Delt Cockrell, of 21.19, had stood since 2002.

“It’s been a real blessing to be able to do what I do,” Thompson said. “I appreciate all my supporters, my family, team and coaches. None of this is possible without them. It’s been a heck of a ride, and I’m ready to to do it one more time at state.”

UT fans will for sure be in attendance when Thompson showcases his skills at the state meet. Thompson is the defending UIL Class 3A state champion in the 200 meter.

Thompson’s teammate, Jeb Garnett, added to the gold medal count for the Lynx winning the 110-meter hurdles race with a 14.93.

Braylen Lusby also had a great outing for Spearman. The sophomore won the 800 meter run clocking a 2:18.95. Lusby then punched her ticket to Austin by getting a silver in the 300-meter hurdles (46.33).

The Childress girls relay made some noise with a banner afternoon. The 400 meter relay of Jaycee Perez, Chloe Churchill, Kate Taylor, Brandi Weeks) ran a season-best 49.24 to hold off Bushland for a gold medal, and a trip to state. Later in the day, the Lady Bobcats 800 meter relay team of Childress Brandi Weeks, Clarissa Gamboa, Kate Taylor, Chloe Carroll ran to a silver medal time 1:44.87 to qualify.

The Bushland track teams will take a host of athletes to Austin. The 400 meter relay team and the 1600 meter relay team placed second. Ellie Frye, who is a part of both qualifying relay squads, also advanced in the 400 meter dash sprinting to a 57.94. Teammate Jessie Fowler, who is a part of the 400 meter relay, won gold in the 100 meter dash running a 12.45 to hold off Canadian’s Samantha Krehbiel in a great race, and Jillian Howell will defend her state shot put title after a gold medal throw of 42-4 1/4.

On the boys side, Eric Grassel leaped an impressive 16-3 to win the pole vault event for the Falcons.

River Road’s Crawford Kiser won the 3200 meter run with a 9:50.48, and advanced in the 1600 meter (4:24.95). As for the race fans had been waiting for, the Childress boys 1600 mile relay squad of Creek Churchill, Lamont Nickelberry, Jacob Daniel, and Mark Willis, clocked a season-best 3:23.44 for a silver medal behind Sonora (3:22.67). Childress edged Canadian’s time of 3:23.57, as the Wildcats earned the wildcard spot for state.

The University Interscholastic League Class 3A state track meet is set for Thursday, May 12, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
