Canyon Lady Eagles soar over Clint

Early round domination of their opponents continued for the Canyon Lady Eagles, as they took a big early lead and were never threatened in routing Clint 73-27 at Odessa Permian.

No. 4 Canyon (28-3) will play No. 13 Seminole (29-7) next week in a region quarterfinal game at a time, place and date to be determined.

It was business as usual for the Lady Eagles against another overmatched district opponent, as they opened the game by hitting three 3-pointers and taking a 20-2 lead. Clint (20-13) ended the quarter by hitting a 3-pointer to make it 20-5, but Canyon opened the second quarter by scoring 17 straight points to take control of the game and end any illusions Clint may have had about a competitive game.

Canyon had balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Tia Glynn had a game-high 15 points, Kinley Cornelsen scored 13, Abree Winfrey added 12 and Jaylee Moss chipped in 11.

Clint had no double-digit scorers, as Evelyn Guerra had nine points.

Panhandle holds on to beat Clarendon

In a solid early round matchup, Panhandle held on the fourth quarter thanks mainly to solid defense to beat Clarendon 52-42 at Pampa’s McNeely Fieldhouse.

No. 7 Panhandle (27-7) will face the winner of Friday’s game between Sudan and Stratford in the Class 2A region quarterfinals next week.

It was as tight a game as would be expected between teams with such stellar records. Panhandle led by 10 at halftime, but No. 24 Clarendon (27-8) wouldn’t go away and cut the margin to four points early in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Panthers made several key stops in the final minutes and preserved their win at the free throw line, hitting nine free throws in the fourth quarter.

Sydnee Adee led Panhandle with 13 points, with nine of those coming from the free throw line. Baylee Gabel led Clarendon with 15 points and Kenidee Hayes had 13.
