Tory Peet registers first win as a head football coach

It’s been a tough start to the season for Groom, but things look to be turning around. After hanging tough with a quality Nazareth team before falling 71-58, Tory Peet picked up his first victory as the head football coach of the Tigers downing Claude (2-2) 60-38 Thursday night. Senior spread back Stephen Kuehler was a handful for the Swifts last week and he was just as impactful against the Mustangs. Kuehler carried the ball 24 times for 294 yards and four scores and passed for another 144 on 14 completions and four touchdowns. For good measure the diminutive Kuehler racked up 11 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Noah Wood added 11 tackles and an interception to help Groom get its first win of the season.

Follett dominates Borden County

Playing a physical, ball hawking brand of defense allowed Follett to dominate Borden County 40-8 in a Friday afternoon game at Nazareth. The Panthers (3-1) defense used a physical front to force the Coyotes to throw and they made them pay in the first quarter when Jayden Watson stepped in front of a pass, tipped it up and then caught it, before racing 65 yards for the score. That was the first of six turnovers for the Panthers. In the second half, Shayne Franks shot in front of another pass and took it to the house from 71 yards. In between, Franks gained 115 yards on the ground and David Meeks was the X factor for the Panther offense adding 92 yards rushing and threw for another 85 as his quickness gave the Coyotes problems. Defensively, Watson was the star with 11 tackles, nine of those solo, and two interceptions. Up front Justin Humbert gave the Borden County line fits racking up nine solo tackles and four sacks while forcing a turnover. The Coyotes were missing their star player, Ishmael Rodriguez, in this game but Follett made a statement in this game with their dominating performance.

Nazareth upends Valley in a fast-moving game

In a fast-moving game Nazareth used an efficient ground attack and timely pass to beat Valley 40-24 at home Friday night. The unbeaten Swifts (4-0) utilized a game plan that took the load off their star spread back Luke Schulte and utilized Will Young and Sterl Welps to perfection. The duo combined for 137 yards and six touchdowns, five of those from Welps. The first half lasted thirty-five minutes with Valley holding a slim 8-6 lead in the second quarter. The Patriots were poised to go up further after Tucker Schlueter recovered a fumble in Nazareth territory, but the offense was unable to punch in a fourth down from the Nazareth 9-yard line, and the Swifts made them pay. On second down Schulte found the speedy Tanner Birkenfeld streaking down the right sideline for a 48-yard gain and Welps finished the drive off with a 1-yard plunge to give the Swifts a 12-8 halftime lead. In the third it was all Nazareth as they outscored Valley 21-8 courtesy of Young and Welps and that was enough for Nazareth to stay undefeated on the season.

Notes from Week 4

The No.7-ranked Happy Cowboys used a staunch defense to throttle Kress 46-0 Thursday night. The Kangaroos (2-2) were held to 75 total yards and Happy (3-1) tacked on pick sixes from Jimmy Reyes and Tryce Johnson for the victory.  Hedley’s Josh Booth was 6-of-9 for 118 yards with three touchdowns and Iziak Weatherread had 98 yards rushing and a score as Owls (2-2) grabbed their second straight victory downing Patton Springs 53-6.  Silverton’s Sawyer Francis helped the Owls make quick work of Lazbuddie 76-28 on Thursday. Francis rushed for 146 yards on only six carries with four of those ending in the endzone. Francis also tacked on a kickoff return for a score. Teammate Kooper Cox did his part as well going 8-of-9 passing for 166 yards and four touchdowns.

Rankin game decided in the final minute…again

A week after losing to top-ranked Westbrook in the final minute of the game the Rankin Red Devils were in familiar territory again Friday night down by one to Knox City.  Same story different ending thought as Deacan Armendarez scored on a fourth downplay from 11 yards out to give the Red Devils a 50-43 victory over the Greyhounds (2-2). Both teams entered the game ranked in the Top 10 and both teams lived up to the pregame billing.  Baret Jackson led Rankin (3-1) with 247 yards rushing on 27 carries and five touchdowns.  Knox City’s Bryson Callaway had four touchdowns passing along with two interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.

Week 5 preview

Some interesting matchups litter the Six-Man landscape next week. The No 9-ranked Silverton Owls head south to take on No. 6 Jayton Jaybirds on Thursday night. Riding the hot hand of Sawyer Francis has propelled Silverton (3-1) into the top ten but they will get a battled tested Jaybirds (2-2) team who has played three ranked teams so far this year.  Groom travels 30 miles east on I-40 to battle upstart and unbeaten McLean. Groom (1-3) has played a tough schedule so far and McLean (4-0) will be facing its toughest opponent of the season. Another unbeaten team gets a tough test as White Deer hosts Springlake-Earth. The Wolverines (1-3) record may be deceiving as their losses are to Whitharral, Valley, and Happy but coach James Ball’s team has been competitive in all three losses. White Deer is hoping to keep the momentum going of a 4-0 start.
