West Texas A&M had a distinct size advantage coming into Saturday’s Lone Star Conference contest against UT Permian Basin.

And dominated with every bit of it.

The No. 19-ranked Lady Buffs punished the Lady Falcons inside, running away for a 83-52 victory in front of 810 fans at the First United Bank Center.

WT’s ability to get the ball inside to post Abby Spurgin was the difference in the game. No matter what defense UTPB threw at the Lady Buffs, the Lady Falcons didn’t have a call that could stop the 6-foot-4 junior.

Spurgin scored 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting, and was 8-of-9 at the free-throw line. Adding to here career scoring effort, Spurgin nabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

“Abby was amazing finishing around the basket,” WT coach Kristen Mattio said. “She knocked down free-throws, did damage on the boards and played great defense. To have a game like he did you have to be pretty consistent, and she is proving that each day.”

Spurgin echoed Mattio’s comments.

“We knew we had a height advantage against UTPB,” said Spurgin, who is averaging a team-best 12.7 points a game. “We knew the guards were going to look to us for points, and we focused on scoring when given the opportunity.”

Spurgin is the first Lady Buff to score 30 points in a game since former All-American post Chontiquah White poured in 32 on March, 7, 2014 at Midwestern State.

Teammate Tiana Parker chipped in with 14 points and eight boards, while Delaney Nix added 12 on 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc.
