Class 3A roundup: Bushland routs Slaton; No. 1 Canadian stays unbeaten, Childress stuns Friona

Bushland opened District 2-3A Division I play exactly how it wanted to with a 58-14 thumping of Slaton on a brisk Friday night at Falcons Stadium.

The No. 5-ranked Falcons never trailed scoring on four of their first 10 plays while executing touchdown drives on their first five possessions of the contest.

Senior quarterback Jared Thomas added to his fantastic year going 11 of 15 for 240 yards with five touchdown passes to four different receivers.

Jake Orcutt was Thomas’ main target, and a thorn in the paw of the Tigers coverage scheme.

Orcutt finished the game snagging three balls for 107 yards and two scores, averaging 35.6 yards a catch.

Bushland remains unbeaten at 6-0 and 1-0 In District 2-3A Division II.

Slaton drops to 3-3, 0-1.

River Road upset falls short

River Road’s upset bid of Shallowater came up short to Shallowater as the Mustangs rallied for a 30-16 win at Todd Field in Shallowater.

The Wildcats fought hard, leading 14-8 at the half.

But down the stretch the Mustangs started to take over, putting up 22 unanswered points in the quarters.

Josh Easley ran for 86 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown for Shallowater. Teammate and quarterback Dylan Kelly added 165 yards passing with two TD tosses.

Brandon Belcher led the Wildcats with 60 yards rushing and two scores.

In the other district game out of 2-3A Division I Litfefield blanked Muleshoe 54-0.

Canadian blows by Tulia

Another night and another win for the Canadian Wildcats.

Canadian piled up the points to punish Tulia 57-14 on Friday at Wildcats Stadium.

The No. 1-ranked Wildcats stay unbeaten at 7-0 and are now 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II.

The Wildcats also extend an eye-opening district win streak to 33 straight games. A win streak that dates back to 2012.

Quarterback Grant McCook was unstoppable against the Hornets (3-3, 0-1), throwing for 274 yards on 14 of 17 passing with four touchdowns.

Two of those touchdowns went to Bill Koetting who had 117 yards receiving in the victory.

The Canadian defense stifled Tulia, holding the Hornets to 128 total yards of offense.

Childress upends Friona

In a mild upset, the Childress Bobcats earned their first win of the year while handing Friona its first loss 27-7 on Friday night at Fair Park Stadium.

A youthful Bobcats team struggled through nondistrict, however, pulled it all together against Friona on both sides of the ball.

The No. 10 Chieftains, who ran through nondistrict undefeated, drop to 5-1 overall but more importantly 0-1 in a competitive District 3-3A Division II.

The Bobcats are now 1-5 but look much better in district at 1-0.

Childress coach Jason Sims defense held the Chieftains in check, limiting Friona to 237 total yards and only 59 yards on the ground. Senior linebacker Morgan Holcomb was a force making 13 tackles.

Offensively for the Bobcats, Miguel Salinas piled up 134 yards rushing with a touchdown on 20 carries.

Spearman rolls over Dimmitt

Spearman snapped a two-game losing skid with a convincing 62–13 victory at Dimmitt on Friday night.

The Lynx racked up 544 total yards of offense that keyed the win.

Spearman improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II. Dimmitt is now 1-5, 0-1.

Jack Wilkerson had a career night for the Lynx totaling 314 yards and four touchdowns.

Wilkerson ran for 167 yards with two scores, adding 147 yards receiving with another two TDs.
