In only the third year as a University Interscholastic League program the Wildorado girls track team was able to accomplish quite the amazing feat during the Region I-1A track and field meet at South Plains College in Levelland on Saturday.

The Lady Mustangs 60 points to fend off Garden City (57 points) to claim the school’s first ever regional team championship.

“Winning regionals is a pretty special deal for our track program and school as a whole,” Wildorado track coach Kara Lucherk said. “We are such a tight knit community. The girls have a ton of younger ones that look up to them and want to follow their footsteps. I can’t say enough good things about these six girls, they have ran whatever event, whenever I asked, knowing it would benefit the team total and all of that paid off today. They are so coachable, tough and hardworking. It’s been amazing and a whole lot of fun.”

Makenna Byrd was the catalyst for Wildorado’s championship. Byrd went double gold in the hurdle events clocking a 15.81 in the 100 hurdles, followed by a 46.21 in the 300 hurdles. On Friday, the sophomore also took gold in the pole vault clearing 9-6. The Lady Mustangs won a silver in the 800 meter relay and nabbed a bronze in the 1600 meter relay.

Hudson won the long jump (16-5 3/4), was part of a gold medal winning 400 meter relay (53.34), then won the 100 meter dash sprinting to a 12.63, and earned a victory in the 200 meter dash with a 26.10

“It’s so exciting,” Hudson said. “It’s taken a lot of work to get where my team and I are at. I can’t thank my coaches enough. This is a dream come true.”
