Wichita Falls— Tascosa’s 2020 season checked into Heartbreak Hotel Saturday evening.

Tascosa saw its season end when Mansfield Summit kicker Keaton Foster booted a 22-yard field goal with no time remaining on the clock lifting Summit to a 31-28 win over Tascosa in a Region I-5A Division I area playoff game at Memorial Stadium.

Foster‘s field goal capped a frantic last minutes of the game that saw Tascosa move into good field-goal territory, only to see an interception end that drive, then in the final seconds give up a long pass to set up the winning field goal.

Tascosa had been rocked early with Summit building a 21-7 lead with 8:29 remaining in the half when Asa Aldridge hauled in a 23-yard pass from David Hopkins.

But Tascosa not only quickly answered the Summit touchdown it took control of the game by halftime reeling off 21 and answered points to lead 28-21.

In a span of four minutes and 53 seconds the Rebs scored those 21 points on a L’Travion Brown 71-yard run, a Jayden Whiteside 4-yard run, then the icing was a Darius Sanders 39-yard fumble return putting the Rebs ahead 28-21 with 3:25 remaining in the half.

But that was all the scoring for Tascosa on the night as it was shut out in the second half.

“Give Summit credit, “said Tascosa Coach Ken Plunk. “They really fought. I think they played better the last two weeks than any other time in the season.”

Summit out gained Tascosa 388 to 231 in total yards, all of the Rebs yards coming on the ground in their triple option offense.

Brown lead the way with 71 yards on one carry, BT Daniel had 12 carries for 55 yards, Major Everhart carried eight times for 53 yards and Joshua Splawn added 43 yards on 13 carries.

This one looked headed to overtime when Summit took over on its final drive with 27 seconds left on its own 30. But Hopkins completed passes of 45 yards to the Tascosa 25, then s 14-yarder pass to the 11 setting up Foster’s clutch kick.

Crazy thing Tascosa blocked Foster’s first attempt but was called for offsides.

“I’m proud of the kids, “Plunk said. “To be able to finish the season was a big deal it has taken an emotional toll on players and coaches alike.

“We’ve won some games like the situation before but just too many mistakes tonight and critical situation this is a heartbreaker.”

Tascosa ends at season at 8-3, while Summit (6-4) advances to regionals against Colleyville Heritage.
