Highland Park outside hitter Nevaeh Rodriguez had a huge sophomore season for a Lady Hornets team that went 36-6 overall that included a trip to the Region I-2A Tournament.
Rodriguez was named District 4-2A Offensive Player of the Year as well being named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 2A All-State team.
The powerful outside hitter finished her sophomore year with 424 kills and 303 digs.
Rodriguez took time out of her schedule to talk with Press Pass Sports about missing her sister, Cynarah, to graduation, and her expectation on the season.
How different is going to be playing without your sister Cynarah?
“It‘s weird. She helps me so much on and off the court. It’s going to be an adjustment but we still talk everyday even when she goes to college.”
How much do you feel your role has changed with your sister graduated and you being a year older?
“I feel like I’m more of a leader now. Last year, I felt like my sister and those seniors were leaders and I just played to their example. Now my job is to be an example to the younger ones.”
It’s been a weird year since March. Obviously you’ve been doing summer workouts, but what else have you done to stay busy?
“I’ve been taking volleyball lessons, and I got a job. I’m working as a cashier at a grocery store here in town. Other than that I’ve just been working out.”
I know Highland Park moved to Class 3A but as always this team always has expectations. You feel those expectations stay the same?
“We lost quite a bit but I think we can still be a very good. We’re young in spots but if we can come together and keep bonding we’ll be a good team.”
How do you like playing for coach (Tara) Salmon?
“I love it. She’s my favorite coach. We get along very well. She’s been there for all of us, and always will be on or off the court. I can talk to her about anything.”
