H.S. Volleyball Tuesday recap: Bushland sweeps AHS-Cooper, Randall downs Canyon

It was a huge night of High School Volleyball in the Texas Panhandle on Tuesday as the UIL allowed Class 6A and Class 5A schools to open their schedules along with the small schools which started a month ago.

In the Amarillo-area, the Class 5A teams highlighted Tuesday with key showdowns in their respective openers.

Here’s three things we learned from Tuesday nights nondistrict action.

Bushland sweeps AHS triangular

The Bushland Lady Falcons bounced back in a big way from a recent loss to Canyon.

Bushland, ranked No. 2. In Class 3A, pulled of sweeps of Lubbock Cooper and No. 3 Amarillo High from Class 5A during an Amarillo High triangular.

The Lady Falcons took down the Lady Pirates 25-22, 25-20, 25-17, followed by a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 win against the Lady Sandies.

Kinley Rudder and Hallie Conklin combined for 25 kills in both matches as sophomore teammate Logan Culpepper dished out a total of 35 assists with five aces.

Bushland improves to 12-2 overall.

It was a rough opening night for AHS (0-2), which was also beaten by Lubbock Cooper in five sets. The Lady Sandies took the first two sets only to see the Lady Pirates rally back for a, 26-28, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10 victory.

Junior hitter Currie Marusak tallied 25 kills through both matches.

Randall sweeps Canyon in battle of CISD

The Randall Lady Raiders picked up where they left off last season by getting a sweep of rival Canyon, 30-28, 25-20, 25-17 at the First United Bank Center.

The No. 2-ranked Lady Raiders, who lost a talented senior class from a state runner up team a year ago, won an agressive first set and was able to control the rest of the match.

Paris Patterson knocked down 13 kills, while Merritt Snell made 18 assists and 14 digs.

Canyon was led by Zoey Sparks seven blocks and three blocks.

Randall is 1-0 on the year. Canyon falls to 6-3.

Tuesday’s top performers

Hereford middle blocker Taytum Stow made 17 kills to go with three blocks as the Lady Whitefaces downed Tascosa 25-21, 25-16, 25-18. Setter Rainer Aven made 33 assists with two aces.

Outside hitter Brenley Rodriguez led Dumas to a 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 sweep of Palo duro with 14 kills and three blocks.

Pampa’s Tynaa Mojica tallied 18 kills to go with four blocks, Hallie Sieck dished out 38 assists, as the Lady Harvesters handed Childress its first loss, 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14.
