Amarillo High’s Currie Marusak (2) and teammate Symone Quilles (6) celebrate during the Lady Sandies sweep of Bell Street rival Randall on Tuesday night at the AHS Activity Center. [Ben Jenkins/ Press Pass Sports]Randall and Amarillo High rekindled its Battle of Bell Street rivalry with the first of two District 3-5A clashes Tuesday night at the AHS Activity Center.

In what was expected to be another classic show down, the Lady Sandies used big runs throughout the match to earn a commanding 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, sweep of the Lady Raiders.

This matchup has arguably become the Texas Panhandle’s best volleyball rivalry over the past decade and for good reason. The tradition and atmosphere speaks for itself when these two teams hit the floor. Even in 2020 with a limited capacity, and socially distanced crowd.

For AHS second-year head coach Mike Moffitt, its his first win against arch-rival Randall, as the Lady Sandies also snap a seven-game losing skid to the Lady Raiders dating back to 2016.

AHS continues its tear winners of nine straight improving to 10-4 overall, while leading District 3-5A with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Randall, which played its first game in a week due to Palo Duro having COVID-19 concerns, falls to 5-3, 1-2.

Each set went back-and-forth with the two teams trading blows between its big hitters. However, AHS took control of the first set scoring the last five points. In the second set with the game tied, 13-13, the Lady Sandies once again ran off six straight points to pull away.

Junior Currie Marusak continues her great season for AHS. The outside hitter was hard to defend knocking down a game-high 17 kills. Jaedyn Woolley did her part getting Marusak set up with 23 assists, and Maddie Kellogg hit the floor for 10 digs.

Randall was led by Kiar Parker’s eight kills, and Lauren De Santiago’s 21 digs.

Notes

COVID-19 has put a damper of most of District 3-5A. Tascosa was forced fo postpone with Plainview on Tuesday, as was Caprock and Palo Duro. There has been no official word on make-up dates as of this writing.

Hereford, which clinched a Class 4A playoff spot Saturday in a win against Canyon, stayed perfect in District 4-4A action sweeping Dumas at home, 25-18, 25-16, 25-11. The Lady Whitefaces are now an impressive 18-1 overall and 7-0 in district.

Rainey Aven dished out 43 kills for Hereford in the win, while teammate Taytum Stow had 15 kills.

Canyon is also playoff bound after taking down Perryton 25-17, 25-14, 25-12. The Lady Eagles keep a tight grip on second place in District 4-4A at 5-2 and are 12-5 overall.

Kenda Evans made seven kills with two blocks to lead Canyon past the Rangerettes.
