On the court: In their District 3-5A opener against Randall, the Dons were fortunate to have a Luckey man on their side. Luckey was Palo Duro’s co-leader in scoring, putting up 18 points as the Dons squeaked out an 84-81 victory to get off on the right foot in district. This season, Luckey has stepped up his game for PD, as he’s one of six players averaging in double digits with 15.9 points a game. He’s shooting an impressive 59.2 percent from the floor this season along with hitting 36.4 percent of his 3-point shots. Luckey is averaging 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Palo Duro is now 17-3 on the season and figures to be a challenger to Amarillo High for the district championship before the season is over.

Coach Jeff Evans: “He’s a kid that plays all phases of the game. Not only does he score the ball well for us, he also is one of our best defenders and one of our best rebounders. He’s a guy that just in the last year or so whose basketball IQ has really come on, so he understands how all phases of the game are related and he really tries to help us across the board. The foundation of Audi is that he’s a very tough kid. He competes really hard. You’re always going to get his best effort. We have six guys that are kind of dominating the minutes playing time wise but all of them have been extremely committed coming out of the covid season. Audi’s been right there with them. Being a junior he’s just going to keep getting better.”

Luckey: “I just feel like I needed to attack more and get the passing game moving to my teammates and get them open. I feel like I was successful at doing that and getting that bucket when we needed it. Even though (the Raiders) were hitting big shots we knew we had to just keep going. It was really big because last year we had lost to (Randall) so this game was really big for us to start off district with a W. I think I’ve improved a lot in getting to the bucket and finishing and my shooting has really improved. Coach Evans said he wanted that out of me.”
