Class 6A-5A roundup: Tascosa clinches 6A playoff spot; Sandies cruise, miscues doom Caprock

Tascosa Rebels shook off a shaky first half to get out of Ratliff Stadium with a 31-15 victory against Odessa High, clinching a District 2-6A playoff berth Friday night.

Tascosa got a lot more than expected from the Bronchos (2-7, 0-4), holding on to a 10-9 halftime lead.

The second half was a different story, as the Rebels (6-3 overall, 2-2 in district) took over with their powering ground game.

Running back Jaiton McMorris opened the second half with his second touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 17-9 lead.

Tascosa eventually wore down the outmatched Bronchos, on a Major Everhart 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, set up when quarterback Joseph Plunk converted a fourth down on a run.

Plunk was his stellar self rushing for 153 yards on 20 carries that included a fourth quarter TD.

Tascosa’s run game finished with 411 rushing yards on the night.

Sandies stay unbeaten in 2-5A D1

Amarillo High won its incredible 43rd straight game against the Lubbock High Westerners dating back to 1972 in a 65-20 rout at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field on Friday night.

Amarillo High stayed undefeated in District 2-5A Division I at 5-0, improving to 7-2 overall.

The Sandies dominated the Westerners, building a 48-6 halftime lead.

Quarterback Will Maynard finished another solid night with 289 total yards, 49 of those on a touchdown run right before half.

He was also 9-of-11 passing with 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Amarillo High will host undefeated and No. 9-ranked Abilene Cooper (9-0, 5-0) for the outright district championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Monterey puts dent in Rock’s playoff hopes

The Caprock Longhorns saw an opportunity to clinch a Class 5A Division I playoff spot slip through their fingers in a lopsided 62-27 loss to Lubbock Monterey on Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

A win, and Caprock was a lock for a postseason berth, however, the Plainsman

took advantage of Longhorn miscues to reel off 42 unanswered points.

Caprock isn’t eliminated from the postseason quite yet. If the Longhorns can still clinch with a win at Lubbock Coronado on Thursday.

The game was close throughout the first half, with Caprock only trailing, 27-20, at half.

Monterey (4-5, 2-3) was able to secure the second half momentum, taking the opening drive 67 yards on seven plays for a score. That gave the Plainsman a 34-20 lead, and they’d never look back.

Caprock struggled, losing four fumbles on the night.

Plainsman quarterback Coreon Bailey had a great game, going completing 21-of-24 passes for 348 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 87 yards on 14 carries.

Rider uses big second half to down Randall

The Randall Raiders offense didn’t take advantage of key opportunities that kept them from clinching a playoff spot in District 3-5A Division II on Friday night on Happy State Bank Field at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

Wichita Falls Rider was able to close the game by scoring 23 unanswered points, that resulted in a 30-7 win over Randall, whose playoff fate is now up in the air going into the

Rider is now 5-4, 3-1 in district. Randall falls to 3-6, 2-2.

Randall, managed only 217 yards of offense. Brayden Beck continued to be a bright spot, has he had his third straight game rushing over 100 yards, with 109 yards on 24 carries.
