Amarillo High put it all together for the first time all season for a blowout 57-3 Homecoming victory against Caprock in the District 2-5A Division opener on a brisk night at Dick Bivins Stadium.
The 54-point margin is the biggest win against the Longhorns rivalry that dates back to 1963.
After battling injuries for the first few weeks, the Sandies once again relied on backup quarterback Brock Wade, who was filling in for injured starter Will Maynard. The junior QB was extremely efficient finishing with 139 yards through the air with four touchdowns on off 11-of-16 passing. Wade found his rhythm early by dropping a perfectly placed over the shoulder 9-yard touchdown toss to senior wideout Davins Lemmons. Lemmons was far from done, making his mark on the defensive side of the ball. The talented senior was ball-hawked an interception, returning it 65-yards to pay dirt putting the Sandies up 14-0 in the first quarter. It was all AHS from that point forward as the Longhorns struggled on offense, and had trouble stopping the Sandies balance. AHS senior running back Taevon Hood rushed for 64 yards, adding a 52-yard touchdown catch. Levi Slayden ended his night for AHS with a game-high 106 yards on 12 carries highlighted by a 70-yard TD.

Tascosa runs past Dons in district opener
The Palo Duro dons showed great effort keeping the ball away from Tascosa, however, the Rebels run game was too strong for the Dons in a 50-12 win during a District 2-5A Division I opener Dick Bivins Stadium on Thursday night.
The extremely efficient option offense of Tascosa scored most of its points through the run but were also able to score via a pass play, a scoop and score, as well as a kickoff return.
The Dons (0-4, 0-1) played an aggressive game, hanging around in the first quarter. The Rebels (3-1, 1-0) still led 16-6, and opened the lead to a comfortable 30-6 by halftime.
Fourteen backs wore down Palo Duro for 293 yards rushing in the game. Fullback Anthony Tuttle led attack with 114 yards on 12 carries. Darius Sanders made the most of his two carries going for 48 yards highlighted by a 23-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
In the second half Carl Ozbun returned a fumble for a score and L’Travion Brown took back a punt for a 90-yard TD.

Randall falls short to Lubbock Cooper
Offense was hard to come by for both teams, but in the end Lubbock Cooper had a little more of it. Randall fell behind early and couldn’t recover, as the Pirates left Happy State Bank Stadium with a 17-7 victory in a District 3-5A Division II opener Friday.
Not only points were hard to come by, yards didn’t come much easier with the two teams combining for 321 yards of offense.
Cooper came out on its opening drive and looked as though its offense was ready to go chewing up 65 yards on 10 plays capped off by a Kaleb Stripling 3-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
That 7-0 advantage stood through halftime. The Pirates then extended their lead to 14-0 on a quarterback Holt Gibson 22-yard touchdown strike to Jacob Politte.
Randall didn’t go away. With its offense sputtering linebacker Branson Britten drew a spark with a defensive TD, putting the Raiders within one possession, 14-7. However, that was as close as Randall came as Cooper picked up insurance on a fourth quarter field goal. Gibson had a good showing for the Pirates completing 17-of-31 passes for 166 yards and a score.
Randall falls to 2-3, 0-1. Cooper is now 4-1, 1-0.
District note
In the other District 3-5A Division II game, Wichita Falls Rider downed city rival Wichita Falls High 53-17.

Dumas dominates Herd
Dumas exploded for a 31-point second quarter to separate themselves from Hereford taking the District 3-4A Division I opener, 48-10, at Whiteface Stadium on Friday night.
The first 12 minutes was tame with the Demons holding a mere 7-0 lead. But the second quarter is when Dumas kicked it into another gear. Hereford actually kicked a field goal to make it 7-3. From there here came the Demons reeling off 41 unanswered points.
The second quarter scoring started with a pair of Jacob Mares TD runs of 25 and 40-yards, quickly pushing the lead to 21-3.
Quarterback Spencer Williams got in on the fun finding Juan Romero on the next possession for a 39-yard pitch and catch. Williams stayed hot throwing another touchdown this time to Luis Ortiz on a 21-yard connection and just like that it was 35-3 Dumas in total control.
Mares ran for a game-high 120 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. Williams went 8-of-12 with three TD tosses and 149 yards through the air.
The Demons defense can’t be overlooked. Dumas limited Hereford to 139 yards of offense.
The Demons (7-1, 1-0) now get set for a huge district showdown at Canyon (7-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Demons Stadium.

Estacado holds off Perryton
It was a heartbreaking end for Perryton on Thursday night in a key District 2-4A Division I matchup.
Lubbock Estacado scored a late touchdown followed by a game-winning interception for a 26-20 victory against the gritty Rangers at PlainsCapital Park at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
The Matadors had taken the lead 26-20 on a QB Jay’lon Dobbins 1-yard sneak with just over three minutes to play.
Perryton quickly responded on its final drive as this came down to the last two minutes. The Rangers drove the ball inside the Matadors 30-yard line going in for the tie. But, like most of the evening turnovers hurt Perryton and it did in this moment. Quarterback Abraham Hernandez looked for an open receiver but instead found Estacado’s Raheim Ross for a crushing interception.
The Rangers turned it over four times with four interceptions in this matchup.
Jahir Romero led Perryton with 83 yards on 13 carried with a score. Senior teammate Brenton Heeter added 70 yards rushing on 17 totes with a TD of his own. Dobbins finished the game going 13-of-19 for 184 yards tacking on three touchdown passes to go with his rushing score.
Perryton drops to 2-5, 1-1. The Matadors improve to 3-6, 2-1.
District note
In the other District 2-4A Division II game, Seminole knocked off Borger 20-7.
