Class 4A roundup: Dumas goes unbeaten, clinches district title; Pampa grounds Canyon; Perryton wins

The Dumas Demons tied the bow on an incredible regular season by using a big second half to pull away from rival Hereford for a 45-13 win on Friday night at a charged up Demons Stadium.

Dumas caps off an incredible season at 10-0, its first unbeaten season since 1997, and the first 10-0 year since 1965.

In 1997, the Demons, led by former head coach Brent McCallie, went 9-0 overall.

The 2019 Demons behind second-year head coach Aaron Dunnam are the outright District 3-4A Division I champions, and will play Wichita Falls Hirschi in A Class 4A Division bidistrict game at 4 p.m. Friday at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field at 4 p.m. Friday in Lubbock.

The Whitefaces (5-5) will play Springtown (9-1) in the bidistrict round at 7 p.m. Friday in Snyder.

The Demons defense did its job, limiting the Whitefaces to 281 total yards, and 71 yards on the ground with two interceptions by defensive back Caleb Suggs.

Offensively, Dumas chewed up 281 yards from its ground game. Cito Rodriguez led the way with 91 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns. Bryan Mendoza added 83 yards on nine carries.

Pampa jumped out to a double-digit lead and made it standup to ground Canyon 38-31 on Friday night on Happy State Bank Field at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

The Harvesters, who finished 4-7 and winless in district last year, ends the regular season at 8-2 overall and 2-1 in District 3-4A Division I.

Pampa is the No. 2-seed behind league champion Dumas and will play Gainesville (8-2) from District 4-4A in the Class 4A bidistrict round at 7 p.m. Friday in Vernon.

The Eagles (6-4, 0-3) struggles continue losing four straight games to end the regular season. Injuries have plagued Canyon, as the Eagles take the fourth and final playoff and will face 4-4A champ Decatur (10-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Fair Park Stadium in Childress.

Quarterback Tucker Bridwell and special teams were key for Pampa’s fist half. Bridwell tossed two touchdowns, while Sean Jenson returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a score.

In the second half, Canyon continues to claw cutting into the lead, however Pampa had answer every time with a pair of Cornelius Landers touchdowns.

Bridwell finished his night 23 of 33 for 288 yards and two scores. He also had a team-high 95 yards on the ground.

Canyon receiver Jack McKay made seven catches for 184 yards with two TDs.

Rangers rout Bulldogs, clinch playoff berth

Cuyler Feger returned the opening kickoff 65 yards giving Perryton a lead it’d never relinquish, as the Rangers went on to trounce Borger in a win or go home game, 50-24, at Bulldogs Stadium on Friday night.

Perryton (2-8, 1-3) earns the fourth and final playoff spot out of District 2-4A Division II. The Rangers move on to the Class 4A Division II playoffs to take on Midland Grewnwood (10-0) at 8 p.m. Thursday night on Happy State Bank Field at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

Feger’s opening touchdown set the tone for Perryton. The Rangers jumped out to a 28-6 from that point forward, thanks to Brayden Klafka two catches for 104 yards and a 42 yard kickoff return.

Borger ends its season at 1-9, 0-4.
