Childress downs Spearman in district clash; River Road rolls, Gruver wins battle of unbeaten teams

Big second half propels Bobcats in district opener against Lynx

In one of the more high-profile showdowns Friday night in the Texas Panhandle, Childress showed off its strength with a dominating second half to down Spearman, 42-16, in a key District 3-3A Division II opener at Fair Park Stadium in Childress.

The No. 3-ranked Bobcats are now a perfect 5-0 on the year, and 1-0 in district. Childress is one of six unbeaten teams that remain in the Amarillo-area.

Spearman falls to 3-2 overall, and 0-1 in district action.

This was a close game with Childress leading 13-10 in the second quarter. The Bobcats found some breathing room with under 30 seconds to play in the half Bobcat quarterback Collin Bishop hit Lamont Nickelberry for a 6-yard score pushing the lead, 21-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Childress broke the game open. Dareon Mathis broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown, followed by a 24-yard pitch and catch from Bishop to Seth Taylor putting the game out of reach for Spearman at 35-10.

Bishop had another outstanding evening going 19-of-24 for 203 yards with three TD passes. The senior also ran for a touchdown.

Mathis grounded out 165 yards on 19 carries with two scores, and Taylor was all over the field on both sides of the ball. On offense, Taylor caught six passes for 81 yards and a score, then made 16 tackles on defense.

Despite the loss, Spearman’s Fabian Hernandez had 94 yards rushing with a touchdown.

District 3-3A Division II

Friona keeps on rolling

The Friona Chieftains stayed unbeaten with a commanding 62-14 win against Dimmitt to open District 3-3A Division II play Friday night at Chieftains Stadium.

Friona is one of only six Texas Panhandle teams that remain undefeated five weeks into the season at 5-0 overall, and 1-0 in district play.

The Chieftains offense made good and them some on their 47.7 points per game putting up a season-high 62 points, and once again they did by the way of balance of the run and pass.

Friona totaled 479 yards, 240 on the ground, while 239 of those yards coming through the air.

Do-it-all senior Bryan Chavira continues his fantastic season. Friona’s Swiss Army knife had seven totes for 66 yards, caught two passes for 99 yards, and was 3-for-5 passing for 77 yards. Chavira ended the game with 242 yards of offense with six touchdowns on his own.

Teammate and quarterback Martin Godinez was key in the win. Godinez was a perfect 6-for-6 passing for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

Dimmitt falls to 2-3, 0-1.

Tulia takes down Highland Park

Tulia won the battle of Hornets with ease stinging Highland Park thanks to a 70-0 blanking at Younger Field in Tulia on Friday.

Tulia exploded offensively for 556 yards of offense and 10 total touchdowns in the win.

The Tulia defense was also superb forcing four total turnovers including three interceptions.

Quarterback Travon McCaslin threw for 283 yards with five touchdown tosses on 21-of-30 completions. Ethan Reyes snagged four of those passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. McCaslin also punched in two rushing touchdowns for a combined seven on the night.

Teammate Damian Cedillo rushed for 131 yards on 15 carries, and added a receiving TD.

Defensively, Brayden Robinson, Austin Bunn, and Jordan Powell all had interceptions.

Tulia bounces back off its first loss last week moving to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II. Highland Park falls to 0-5, 0-1.

Wildcats ground Eagles

River Road made it a happy Homecoming by throttling Sanford-Fritch 41-13 on Friday night at Wildcats Stadium.

Head coach Bryan Welps and his team utilized their powerful ground game wearing down the Eagles with 353 yards on the ground.

For a second straight week it was senior running back Elliot Brown doing the heavy lifting. Brown knifed through Fritch (1-4 overall) totaling a game-high 153 yards on 16 carries punching in a pair of touchdowns. Teammate Dylan Frye was equally impressive going for 146 yards on 18 carries with a pair of TDs of his own.

The Wildcats defense did its job holding the Eagles to 111 total yards.

River Road improves to 3-2 overall on the year.

Falcons soar past Perryton

Bushland stayed hot picking up its third win in a row soaring past Perryton 31-6 for a Homecoming victory Friday night at Falcons Stadium.

After a rough start to the year, the Falcons are hitting their stride improving to 3-1 overall. The Rangers have now dropped four straight since winning their season opener, falling to 1-4.

Bushland jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, then extended the advantage to a comfortable 17-0 lead by halftime.

Quarterback Brian Marrell was efficient completing 12-of-20 passes for 109 yards with a touchdown. Kash Bradley found the end zone two times, hauling in five catches for 36 yards with a touchdown, and scoring on a rushing TD.

The Falcons defense was stingy hodling Perryton to 177 total yards, and 1-of-8 passing for six yards. Linebacker Kyler Duke led Bushland with 15 total tackles, three of those solo, with three for a loss, and two sacks.

Matt Bridges added 14 tackles with two fumble recoveries.

Seminole outguns Muleshoe

Muleshoe started fast, but wasn’t able to keep up with the pace of Seminole’s explosive offense during a, 51-35, Indians win on Friday night at Wigwam Stadium in Seminole.

The game started off at a frantic pace. Muleshoe led 14-13 after one, then the contest was tied, 28-28 heading into halftime. However, the Mules had no answer for Seminole quarterback Blake Flowers. Flowers, the son of former Bushland and West Texas High coach Steven Flowers, totaled 382 of the Indians 608 yards in the game. The junior was the catalyst for outscoring Muleshoe 23-7 in the second half, finishing his spectacular night going 24-of-35 through the air for 252 yards with two touchdowns. Flowers also chewed up the Mules for 130 yards rushing on 17 totes with another three scores.

Muleshoe quarterback Zach Halsey played well going 16-of-27 for 235 yards with three touchdowns.

Seminole, which is coached by former Pampa head coach Greg Poynor, is now 2-3 overall. Muleshoe falls to 2-3.

Gruver wins battle of unbeaten teams

Gruver maintained an early lead and never looked back to stay undefeated on the year taking down Shamrock 35-15 on Friday night at Greyhounds Stadium.

Not only is Gruver one of six teams that remain unbeaten in the Texas Panhandle at 4-0, but the Greyhounds also hand Shamrock (4-1) its first loss of 2021.

Gruver came out firing taking a 15-0 lead after the first quarter. Shamrock didn’t go away taking back momentum when Caden Peevy intercepted a Mason Gibson pass with the Greyhounds threatening returning it inside the Gruver 40-yard line. A few moments later, Peevy punched it in from a yard out cutting the lead, 15-7.

Gruver was able to answer however, behind Pratt McLain. McLain broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown giving the Greyhounds a 21-7 halftime advantage.

McLain wasn’t done. The sophomore was an integral part of the Gruver second half scoring two more times in the second half. On the night, McLain ran for 146 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries.

The Greyhound defense was huge in this battle. Shamrock was unable to convert a third down down going 0-for-9 on the night. If that weren’t enough, they held the Irish to 1-for-6 on fourth down as well.

Ridge Holland tacked on 111 yards on 21 carries for Gruver.

Irish quarterback Kit Macina ran for 84 yards, and Peevy had two scores.

Stratford stifles Panthers

Stratford has been a force to be reckon with all season, and that continued during a 34-14 victory against Panhandle on Friday night at E.L. Sam Bass Stadium in Stratford.

This was a first half battle with the Elks leading 14-7 at halftime.

That’s until Stratford QB Cody Rinne got going.

Rinne opened up the offense in the second half as the Elks exploded outscoring Panhandle 20-7 in the final two quarters.

Rinne was the spark throwing for 240 yards on 12-of-23 passing and a score. The senior did it with his legs as well with 141 yards on 21 carries with four house calls.

Receiver Dru Jones caught four balls for 82 yards and a score to add to Stratford’s effort.

Panther QB Landyn Hack did his best to keep the Panthers in it. The dual-threat signal caller finished his night with 116 yards rushing with a touchdown. He also threw for another score.

Stratford improves to 4-1 overall. Panhandle is still looking for its first win falling to 0-4.

Sunray second half shutout fuels win

The Sunray Bobcats trailed erased an 8-point halftime deficit to get a huge road win at Wheeler, 42-28, on Friday night at Nicholson Field in Wheeler.

The Mustangs led 28-20 the half after a 60-yard pass and catch between Jovanny Gallardo from Nathan Rowley.

Rowley was a huge part of Wheeler’s offense in the first half picking up three touchdowns, and finishing with 208 yards passing and 106 yards on the ground.

Gallardo was on the receiving end of three of those passes, compiling two scores on 124 yards.

The Bobcats made adjustments, and the second half was a different story. After giving up 253 yards in the first half, Sunray held Wheeler to only 134 total yards and forced a fumble in the process. The defense standing their ground allowed the offense the opportunity to put the Bobcats ahead. It was the connection between receiver Jimmy Dominguez and quarterback Armando Lujan that fueled the scoring for Sunray in its comeback. The pair connected on all three of the second half scores from 89, 21, and 51-yards out.

Sunray moves to 3-2 overall with the big road victory. Wheeler falls to 3-2.

Vega bounces back

Vega avenged its first loss of the season with a 62-13 blistering of Bovina on Friday night in Bovina.

Ryan Grawunder was at it once again for Vega accounting for five touchdowns in the Longhorn victory.

The senior finished 5-of-6 through the air, but that’s all he needed to wreak havoc finishing with 45 yards and three touchdown passes. Grawunder did damage with his feet as well, picking up an additional 115 yards and two touchdowns. Clay Gilter and Jose Silerio got in on the action as well, picking up 100 plus yards each as Gilter finished with two scores.

The Longhorn defense held Bovina to 206 total yards on the night as well as forcing four turnovers.

Vega improves to 4-1 overall. Bovina is now 1-4.

Clarendon keeps rolling

The Clarendon Broncos stayed undefeated with a 49-27 thumping over Quanah at home in Clarendon on Friday night.

The Broncos are a perfect 5-0 overall. The Indians fall to 0-5.

Over the past three game the Broncos offense has been a juggernaut scoring a total of 154 points.

Lyric Smith and Division I prospect Jmaury Davis were a dynamic punch for Clarendon. Both Smith and Davis scored two touchdowns on the ground. Smith, a sophomore, finished his night with 153 yards on eight carries as Davis picked up 98 yards on nine carries. Brock Hatley was solid at QB completing 7-of-14 passes for 148 yards and two touchdown passes. Lamarcus Pennigar was impressive at wide out with six catches for 129 yards and two scores.

Skyrockets lift off against Jacksboro

Wellington played its best game to date blowing out Jacksboro 44-12 in Fredrick, Okla., on Friday night.

The Skyrockets (2-2) have found their stride as key players continue to return to the lineup. Quarterback Creighton Killian is back and healthy. That showed as the senior offense rolling in the first half as the quarterback finished the half with three touchdown passes and finishing his night going 4-of-7 through the air for 88 yards.

All-State running back Marc Ramirez pummeled Jacksboro thanks to 164 yards and two TD runs on 21 carries.

Kayden Valles had himself a night with three receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Booker finds the win column

Booker collected its first win of the season Friday night taking out the Memphis Cyclones 22-7 on the road in Memphis.

Regardless of the final score, this matchup was close right down until the final quarter.

Memphis actually had the lead after the first quarter 7-0 after a 49-yard touchdown completion to Cutter O’Neal from Edgar Villa. The Kiowas responded in the second quarter on a Diego Hernandez touchdown run, and converted the 2-point attempt with a run by Jesus Jiminez. That gave Booker an 8-7 lead at half.

Jiminez found himself back in the endzone in the final quarter on a 19-yard run, then put his team ahead 16-7 after he finished off another 2-point conversion. Jiminez tallied 150 yards rushing with his two scores on 19 attempts.

The Kiowas are now 1-3 on the year. Memphis falls to 1-4.
