Canyon girls cruise, Stuart wins third straight title; Perryton boys, Gruver girls advance to state

[John Moore/ Press Pass Sports] Nothing is more of a lock of late than seeing the Canyon girls cross country team add more hardware to an already crowded trophy case.

The Lady Eagles dynasty took another rich step further Tuesday capturing its third straight Region I-4A championship at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

The two-time defending University Interscholastic League Class 4A state champions, ran a near flawless team race with 29 points placing four individuals in the top 10, that included seeing Breanna Stuart and Abree Winfrey come in first and second.

Stuart took gold as the individual champion by running an 11:48.90. Stuart continues her dominance at regionals as the junior won her third straight Region I-4A individual championship. Stuart, who has never lost at regional, ran a time of 11:49.80. Winfrey, the District 4-4A champion, placed second pacing a 12:07.10 and Stuart’s sister, Hannah, a freshman, came in fourth with a 12:33.80.

Pampa’s Lexi Maul qualified as an individual.

The Perryton boys team is headed to the UIL state meet. The Rangers pushed regional champion San Elizario (68 points) coming up just four points short with 72 for a runner up finish at the Region I-4A meet.

Andrew Ceniceros highlighted the regional for the Rangers placing third running a 16:28.30. Teammate Julio Rivero was also a top 10 finisher clocking a 17:09.70.

Samuel Ashley of Canyon came in second place as an individual to clinch a spot at state. Ashley ran a strong race with a time of 16:06.60. Ashley’s teammates Austin Deberry also qualified.

Region I-2A

It was a very successful morning for Amarillo-area cross country teams and individuals during the Region I-2A meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on Tuesday morning.

Wellington’s Kyla Kane and Shamrock’s Hayden Stroope each brought home individual titles while the Gruver girls advanced to the UIL Class 2A state meet.

Kane added on to what has already been an magnificent running career. The Wellington junior claimed her third straight Region I-2A title by leading the field with a 12:26.80. Kane, a 2018 UIL Class 2A state champion, will make her third straight appearance at the state meet.

The Gruver girls qualified for the state meet with a second place finish behind regional champion Sundown. Sophomore Brenna Butler led the Lady Hounds by coming in fourth with a time of 13:10.40. Teammate Abigail Salgado came in 10th pacing a 13:29.60.

Sunray’s Katelyn Hernandez (13:09.40) placed third to advance as an individual. Annmarie Counts of Boys Ranch, Bovina’s Ireydi Vela, and Lula Nolen of West Texas High also qualified.

Stroope won the 2A boys individual championship, as well as earning his way back to state for a third time with an impressive performance. The Irish senior pulled away from the field to win by clocking an 18:08.30. Panhandle’s Levi McGill was the runner up thanks to run of 18:15.30. McGill’s teammate Clint Maurer and Sunray’s Zahir Loya also advanced,
