Buff briefs: Weekend review from West Texas A&M athletics

Men’s basketball off to hot start

Head coach Tom Brown and the Buffs opened the season in style during the the Division II Basketball D2CCA Tipoff Classic as they claimed the event championship with wins over No. 4 Colorado Mesa (72-63), MSU Moorhead (87-65), and Daemen (69-66), at the First United Bank Center. Transfer Julius Brown was named the Tournament MVP as he averaged 16.7 points per game while teammates Zach Toussaint and Larry Wise were also named to the All-Tournament team.

Prock earns first win at WT

First-year head coach Josh Prock and the Lady Buffs battled the top teams in the country this past weekend at the D2CCA Tipoff Classic in Canyon. The Lady Buffs fell to Central Missouri (67-59), Drury (91-78), before beating Southwestern Oklahoma State, 81-68, getting Prock his first win at WT.

Zamorye Roberts and Alivia Lewis were named to the All-Tournament team.

WT travels to Waco on Wednesday night to take on defending Big 12 Champion Baylor in exhibition action at the Ferrell Center.

Buffalo football bounces back

West Texas A&M forced four turnovers, and added a late touchdown to hold off Texas A&M-Kingsville a 35-23 victory on Saturday night in Kingsville.

WT is now 5-4 overall, and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference.

Junior Jarrod Compton was dominant as the lLubbock Coronado graduate registered 179 yards of total offense with 147 of those coming on the ground with two scores.

Noah Bogardus led the way in the receiving core with three catches for 64 yards and a TD.

Quarterback Nick Gerber finished the night going 11-of-15 thru the air with 153 yards and a pair of touchdown,

Defensively, Satchel Escalante was the spark for the Buffs registering 12 total tackles (seven solo)

to go along with two interceptions.

WT returns home to face LSC rival Midwestern State at 6 p.m. Saturday.


WT volleyball win streak carries on

The Lady Buffs continued their winning ways this past weekend as they swept past Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International, running their win streak to 12 games while remaining unbeaten at The Box. Camy Jones led the way with 14 kills on Friday night while Torrey Miller registered 14 kills with a .684 attack percentage against the Dustdevils.

WT (18-2, 12-1) hits the road this week for a pair of big LSC matches against No. 4 Angelo State and Lubbock Christian.


Buff soccer sit third in LSC

The Buffs sit third in the Lone Star Conference standings entering the final week of the regular season following a 6-3 victory over UT Permian Basin last Wednesday night in Canyon. Stefan Andjelic and Rotem Weiss both scored twice in the victory to move the Buffs to 11-3 overall. WT travels to Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday night followed by a Saturday showdown with No. 8 Midwestern State at The Pitch in Canyon.

WT women’s soccer wins a pair

The Lady Buffs got back to their winning ways this past week with victories over Eastern New Mexico and St. Mary’s to improve to 11-5 overall as they sit eighth in the initial NCAA Regional Rankings.

LSC Player of the Year candidate Hannah Kelley-Lusk scored three goals over the two wins to run her season total to 21 goals and an incredible 50 points. WT travels to Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday before hosting Texas A&M International in the regular season finale on Saturday.

Men’s golf places 12th

WT’s Eemeli Jarvinen fired a 2-under par 70 in the final round of The Tulsa Cup to finish tied for 12th overall on the individual leaderboard. Jarvinen registered three birdies and a bogey during Tuesday's final round to finish with a 213 (-3). The Buffs shot their lowest round of the tournament in the final round, firing a +2 (290) highlighted by 12 feathers as they finished the event tied for 14th with an 883 (+19).

Songprasert wins Tulsa Cup

LSC Women’s Golfer of the Week Gam Songprasert led the way for the Lady Buffs at The Tulsa Cup, picking up her first collegiate victory with a 222 (74-73-75). Meredith Jameson claimed her 20th career victory as the Lady Buffs shot a three-round total of 905 (300-303-302) at Meadowbrook Country Club.

WT cross country set for South Central Regional

The Buffs and Lady Buffs continue preparation for the 2021 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships on Saturday at Lubbock Christian.
