Big school roundup: Rider holds off AHS, Tascosa rolls Palo Duro; 3-4A D1 has big night

A 21-point first quarter deficit was too much for Amarillo High to overcome, falling at Wichita Falls Rider 38-24 on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Raiders jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead, scoring on their first three possessions. Quarterback Jacob Rodriguez hit Nick Darcus on an 18-yard touchdown to open the scoring, followed by touchdown runs of 17 and 12 yards by Tre Byrd.

AHS (1-2) rallied, cutting the lead at 31-24 in third quarter after Will Maynard connected to Davin Lemmons on an 8-yard TD.

That’s as close as the Sandies could get it. Rider (2-1) punched a fourth quarter touchdown in on a Rodriguez 15 yard run.

Maynard was 17 of 24 for 131 yards and two TD tosses. Rodriguez was 16 of 26 for 225 yards with two touchdowns.

Tascosa runs over Palo Duro

Tascosa had no problems bouncing back from a heartbreaking loss to Amarillo High, thumping Palo Duro by a 49-7 mark on Friday night at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Rebels opened the game up fast as Joseph Plunk scored on a 46-yard run not two minutes into the game, putting Tascosa up 7-0.

From there Tascosa continued to pile it on, opening up a 35-0 lead by half.

The Rebels ran for an astounding 544 yards led by Plunk’s 165 yards and four touchdowns.

Big second half leads Estacado over Caprock

Lubbock Estacado scored 28 unanswered second half points to hold off a Caprock upset bid, getting past the Longhorns 35-14 on Friday night at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

The Matadors move to 3-0 overall while Caprock is still in search of its first win at 0-3.

Caprock led 14-7 at half, jumping out on top when Jose Reynoso scored on a 47 yard strike from Richard DeLeon in the first quarter

But in second half, Matadors QB Jay’Lon Dobbins took over scoring all four times. Running back Jermiah Dobbins, the brother to Jay’Lon, was unstoppable piling up 255 yard on 25 carries in the win.


Hereford rolls past Randall

The Hereford Herd used a big second half to get by Randall 30-14 at Whiteface Stadium on Friday night.

Hereford is now 2-1 while Randall falls to 1-2.

The Whitefaces opened up a 10-3 halftime lead, by outscoring the Raiders 21-0 in the second half.

Herd running back Xavier Gonzalez was the difference rushing for 177 yards on 33 carries with three touchdowns.


Canyon stays unbeaten

Canyon stayed undefeated with a convincing 55-6 win over Lamesa on Friday on Happy State Bank Field at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

Eagles running back Aidan Hildinger scored on a pair of touchdowns of 42 and 4-yards.

Quarterback Jay Defoor threw four touchdown passes.

Canyon is 3-0 on the year. Lamesa is 0-3.


Dumas wins defensive slugfest

Dumas holds Wichita Falls High to a scoreless game as the Demons win at home by a surprising score of 7-0.

The key performance in the win was none-other than a lock-down Dumas defense.

The Demons’ defense shut down Wichita Falls High’s offense allowing only 120 yards. The Dumas secondary held the Coyotes’ senior quarterback Zy Gravitt to a 41.7 completion percentage and only picking up 65 yards through the air.

The lone score came in the third quarter when running back Jacob Mares plowed his way in on a 4-yard run. The junior had a challenging night, however, led both teams in rushing yards with 80 yards on 12 carries.

Dumas improves their record to 3-0 on the year after downing Wichita Falls High whose record falls to 0-3.


Pampa routes Vernon

Pampa scored early and often to blowout Vernon 47-6 at Lions Stadium-Leo Brittain Field on Friday night.

Pampa improves to 2-1 overall, as Vernon falls to 0-3.

Cornelius Landers had 128 yards rushing on only five carries that included a 90-yard touchdown run.
