Amarillo High safety Trey Thomas (23) breaks up a pass during the Sandies, 44-17, win against Lubbock High in a District 2-5A Division I clash in Lubbock. [Aubrey Bippert/ Hub City Preps]Amarillo High wrapped up its regular season using a big first half to take down Lubbock High 44-17 in a District 2-5A Division I game at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field on Friday afternoon.

AHS finishes the regular season at 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district play. The Sandies will wait for the regular season to finish, but looked to be locked in as the No. 3-seed out of the district.

The Sandies, who haven’t loss to the Westerners since 1973, built a 44-3 halftime lead, and tallied 433 total yards in the ballgame.

The Sandies thoroughly dominated the first half from start to finish, finding the end zone on all six of their possessions.

Sandies quarterback Brock Wade threw his four touchdowns on Amarillo’s first five possessions to four different receivers as Wade threw for 256 yards. The Sandies defense, meanwhile, held the Westerners to a field goal and just 95 total yards in the first half.

A Trey Thomas interception of Smith at the Amarillo 27 then allowed the Sandies to reach into their bag of tricks. Wade hit Phillips on a quick tunnel screen, but Phillips then pitched back to guard Erik Gray, who eluded several LHS tacklers down the sideline for a 73-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds left in the half, giving the Sandies a 44-3 lead at the intermission.

Davin Lemmons made six catches for 69 yards in the win, however, Gray’s lone catch and score made him the teams leading receiver.
