AHS downs Tascosa

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies had no trouble going to visit crosstown rival Tascosa, leaving with an 80-51 victory on Tuesday night at the THS Activity Center.

Thanks to an upset by Palo Duro knocking off Plainview 52-47, AHS (15-2) also pulled into a first place tie with the Lady Bulldogs (15-6) for the District 3-5A lead at 6-1. The Lady Sandies even clinched a playoff spot in the process. Palo Duro put themselves in good place for playoff spot with the victory moving to 15-6, 3-4.

Amaia Chiles, Zeryhia Aokuso, and Briley Barnes did it all for the Lady Sandies. Chiles led AHS with 15 points, followed by Aokuso and Barnes, who had 13 a piece. Despite the loss, Jessalyn Gonzales ended up with a game-high 27 for Tascosa.

Battle of Wheeler County didn’t disappoint

It was a classic showdown in the latest installment of the Wheeler County rivalry. The Lady Mustangs were able to fend off a valiant effort from Shamrock, 57-54, in overtime on Tuesday night. Wheeler’s win was pivotal. The Lady Mustangs (6-12 overall) are now 3-5 in District 2-2A, one game up on the Lady Irish (8-19, 2-6) for the fourth and final playoff spot. Perla Almanza was the difference maker in the game, scoring a game-high 30 points for Wheeler. Despite a tough loss, Shamrock senior Kynnan Shields poured in 27 points as she has now gone over 1,500 points and rebounds for her career.

Tuesday’s top performers

Kailee Benton led Randall to its first district win with 16 points in a 52-29 win against Caprock.

Stratford’s Cody Paige Audrain chipped in 19 in a victory against West Texas High.

Kenli Johnson of Happy was all smiles pouring in 15 points that led the Cowgirls past Wildorado.
