Lady Sandies Williams honored for 600th win

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies honored head coach Jeff Williams for earning a special milestone.

Williams won his 600th career victory when his No. 4-ranked Lady Sandies defeated Atascosita 70-41 at the Mansfield Tournament on Dec. 28. During a 64-46 thumping of Plainview in a District 3-5A clash at home Friday, AHS praised Williams following the win with a special game ball.

Williams is 604-201 during his 25 years as a head coach, 18 of those coming at Amarillo High.

As for the game, McKenzie Smith led all scorers with 23 points, as AHS teammate Lacey Rice added 16. AHS is 20-5 overall, and 3-0 in district. Plainview falls to 13-12, 2-1.

Wellington stays hot

Wellington made sure they weren’t going to fall victim of an upset Friday night. The No. 6-ranked Skyrockets pulled away from Clarendon for a 60-25 victory. Leading just 22-18 at the half, Wellington puts the clamps down defensively outscoring the Lady Broncos, 38-7, in the final two quarters. Senior guard Kyla Kane poured in a game-high 24 points, followed by Hadlee Gomez with 18. Wellington (20-5) stays in first place in 2-2A at 3-0. Clarendon (16-13) falls to 2-1.

Friday’s top performers

Sadie Sanchez kept Randall a perfect 3-0 in District 3-5A play scoring a game-high 25 points during a 76-39 victory at Palo Duro.

Panhandle’s Kandin Ford racked up a career-high 30 points as the Ettes blew out Memphis 75-24.

Taylor Thomas kept the Lady Eagles unbeaten in district play scoring 18 points in a 64-26 win at Dumas.
