3 things that happened in boys hoops around the Amarillo-area Friday night

Highland Park’s Hunter Nicholas scored a career-high 43 points during a District 2-2A game against Panhandle on Friday. The Panthers were able to hold off the Hornets, 73-69. [John Moore/ Press Pass Sports]

District 2-2A gets better and better

It sounds like a broken record but how good is District 2-2A? All three games Friday night came down to within five points of less. Memphis nearly pulled an upset on Clarendon, falling 58-53. Panhandle had five players in double-digits to hold off Highland Park, 73-69, and Wheeler closed out Wellington 43-39 on the road. It should be a very entertaining second half of district play.

Is Pampa back?

The Harvesters closed out the first half of District 4-4A with a 79-40 rout of rival Perryton. Senior standout Chase Landers had another magnificent night scoring a game-high 30 points. Pampa closes out the first half of district with a perfect 4-0 mark, and are 24-5 overall. The Harvesters are showing shades of the Pampa teams of the 1990‘s led by former coach Robert Hale. Landers maybe the best player at the school since former Texas Tech star, Rayford Young, who is also the father of Atlanta Hawks guard, Trae Young.

Friday’s top performers

Despite a tough 73-69 loss to Panhandle, Highland Park’s Hunter Nicholas went off for a career-high 43 points for the Hornets.

Randall’s Kainan Thomas scored 24 points to lead the Raiders to a key, 75-69, District 3-5A win against Plainview.

Canadian forward Josh Culwell chipped in 27 during a 83-58 win against Tulia on Friday.

Vega’s Ryan Grawunder went 5-of-8 from downtown, scoring a game-high 31 points during the Longhorns 75-54 home victory against Olton.

Camden Sperry and Arik Coile each poured in 17 as Happy downed Wildorado 64-25. Sperry was the hot from the perimeter, knocking down 5-of-6 shots from 3-point land.
