PD stuns No. 2 Amarillo High

Palo Duro kept its playoff hopes alive in a huge way by stunning No. 2-ranked and District 3-5A leading Amarillo High with a surprising 64-61 win at the PD Activity Center on Tuesday night.

This was a far different outcome for a reeling Dons team that were blown out by the Sandies, 86-58, not so long ago on Jan. 22.

The victory more importantly keeps Palo Duro (16-5 overall) in the District 3-5A playoff hunt. The Dons, Tascosa and Plainview are all tied for the final two spots in the league race at 4-5. Palo Duro travels to Plainview on Friday where a win guarantees them a trip to the postseason. Paetyn Walker and Jelani Mohamed were lights out against the Sandies combining for 34 points. Walker paced Palo Duro with 19 points while Mohamed added 15. Sandies sharp shooter Brendan Hausen had a game-high 26 points.

What a night in 3-2A

It was an unforgettable night in District 3-2A as both games not only had huge playoff implications, but big time performances. In a district showdown, Olton clinched the outright title sweeping the season series from Farwell 55-50. Olton is now an eye-opening 22-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. Farwell falls to 23-3, 5-2. Mustang standout Chris Urbina led the way with 17 points. The Battle of Oldham County between Boys Ranch and Vega had quite the fireworks. The Longhorns held off the Roughriders 79-71 in a triple overtime thriller to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot out of the district. But the story was two individual performances. Boys Ranch got a career-night from Jayden Slater, who put up an incredible 40 points with four dunks in the contest. Not to be outdone, Vega guard Carson Grawunder messed around and got a triple-double pouring in 24 points to go with 13 rebounds and 11 assists that helped the Longhorns to the win.

Tuesday’s top performers

Behind Christian Kelso’s 19 points, Dumas clinched a Class 4A playoff for a third straight year downing Pampa 66-62. The Demons, who hadn’t made the playoff since 1971 before this recent streak, lost nine seniors off last years team, and don’t have a senior on this seasons squad.

Brock Corman of Canyon scored 17 points to help the Eagles soar past Hereford, 60-53, in overtime, and also clinch the outright District 4-4A title.

Nathan Welch’s 25 points helped Bushland clinched the outright District 1-3A in a 57-48 win against Spearman.

Panhandle squeaked past upset-minded Shamrock, 70-64, behind Zion Mercer’s 26 points. The loss spoiled a tremendous showing by Irish forward Sean Wright who tallied a game-high 38 points.
