Cowboys stun Wildorado

Happy kept its playoff hopes alive rallying from behind to stun Wildorado 41-40 in a very entertaining District 3-1A game at Wildorado on Tuesday.

The Cowboys found themselves down by eight points with just over three minutes to play. Happy started chipping away, eventually tying the game, 40-40, when Jimmy Reyes knocked down a huge 3-pointer with 25 seconds. Moments later, point guard Camden Sperry stole the ball from the Mustangs and was fouled. Sperry hit the eventual game-winner by making one of his two free-throws, giving Happy a 41-40 lead with 17 seconds to play. Wildorado had one final chance but Swayde Cleavinger’s 3-pointer came up no good at the buzzer.

Happy improves to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in district. Wildorado falls to 16-5, 6-3. The Mustangs currently hold the third and final playoff spot behind Nazareth and Texline.

Arik Coile led the Cowboys with 12 points, followed by Sperry’s eight. Mustang standout Cleavinger led all scorers with 18.

Canyon holds off Perryton

Canyon made a long road trip up north worth it by holding off Perryton, 44-40, in a key District 4-4A matchup Tuesday night in Perryton.

The Eagles took the lead for good by halftime, never relinquishing the advantage the rest of the way despite an outstanding effort from the Rangers. Sophomore Kemper Jones was vital for the Eagles around the basket scoring a game-high 15 points.

Canyon (12-7 overall) also clinches a Class 4A playoff spot moving to 5-0 in district. Perryton falls to 8-7, 3-2.
