Clarendon wins a classic

The No. 2-ranked Clarendon Broncos erased a 14-point lead on the road at Panhandle, and escaped with a come-from-behind 87-84 overtime thrilling win on Friday night at the Panthers Gym.

Clarendon trailed 49-35 midway through the third quarter, but were able to chip away cutting the lead to 78-75 with 16 seconds left in the game. That’s when Broncos guard Sylvester Ballard took a pass off the inbound in those closing seconds and banked in a 3-pointer off the glass with three seconds left tying the contest, 78-78, to force overtime. In overtime, Panhandle went up 84-82 with 30 seconds left when Dylan Segura made a floater in the lane. But on the other end, Jmaury Davis answered getting a bucket in the lane and was fouled with 15 seconds left. Davis made the free-throw giving Clarendon a lead, 85-84. The Broncos added a pair of free-throws with under 10 seconds, extending the lead 87-84. The Panthers had one final chance but a Segura 3-point attempt hit off the back of the iron as time expired.

Ballard was the difference for Clarendon going off for a career-high 37 points. Davis added 19.

Segura ended up with 24 for Panhandle, followed by Zion Mercer’s 23.

Clarendon (17-4 overall) clinches the outright District 2-2A title moving to 9-0. Panhandle falls to 15-5, 7-2.

Texline takes it to Naz

The second meeting in a heavily anticipated matchup between two of the best in Class 1A was much different than the first matchup a few weeks ago.

Texline avenged a 71-68 loss to the Swifts in a big way, going on the road and dominating Nazareth 72-52 on Friday night.

The Tornadoes opened the game up in the second quarter taking a commanding 39-22 lead into halftime. Nazareth never recovered, as Texline kept the momentum going through the third and fourth quarter. Junior forward William Luther was tough for the Swifts to stop scoring a game-high 30 points.

Texline (18-3 overall) pulls into a first place tie in the District 3-1A standings with the Swifts (18-9) at 10-1.
