District 3-5A playoff scenario

The regular season wasn’t enough for the final two playoff to be determined in District 3-5A on Friday night.

Tascosa, Palo Duro and Plainview all took the floor at 4-5 in district bidding for a chance at the final two playoff spots from the district.

The Bulldogs (11-15, 5-5) took care of business by downing Palo Duro at home, 80-64, clinching the third spot behind second place Randall (21-3, 8-2).

The Dons (16-6, 4-6) loss put them in a fourth place tie with Tascosa (7-18, 4-6) for the final playoff spot. The Rebels didn’t get off to a good start Friday, falling to district champion Amarillo High 69-48. Palo Duro and Tascosa are tentatively set to meet in a play-in game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Amarillo High. If the Dons can win they’ll qualify for the postseason for a 20th straight year.

District 1-2A is a mess

District 1-2A is having to sort itself out after a three-way tie for second place between Stratford, Sanford-Fritch and Sunray. All three teams finished the district race at 4-4.

After a coin flip to decide a district playoff, it was decided that Sunray will play Sanford-Fritch at 3 p.m. Saturday at West Texas High in Stinnett. The winner of that game will go on to face Stratford on Monday night, back in Stinnett for second place. The loser between Sunray and Fritch will be the No. 4-seed.

Friday’s top performers

Borger’s Gabriel Campoya scored a game-high 26 points leading the Bulldogs to their first district win by beating rival Pampa 67-52.

Bushland’s Scotty Hendricks, Brody Sutterfield and Nathan Welch combined for 52 points in a 73-52 win at Dalhart. Hendricks poured in 20, followed by Sutterfield’s 19 points and Welch’s 18. The Falcons are the outright District 1-3A champions at 10-0.

Hedley is one of the top feel good story’s of the Texas High School Basketball season. The Owls are playoff bound in Class 1A, and playing with a ton of confidence after upsetting Valley 49-44 on Friday. Sophomore Josh Booth scored a game-best 26 points in the victory against the Patriots.
