Class 2A area roundup

Despite the extremely cold temperatures and snowy conditions, Class 2A highlighted the Texas Panhandle with three University Interscholastic League area round girls playoff matchups taking place Monday.

As most fans have been waiting for, Gruver and Panhandle’s collision course will finally come to fruition. The No. 8-ranked Lady Hounds (22-2) rolled past Olton, 79-28 at Caprock, while the No. 2-ranked Ettes (24-3) handled Farwell 65-37.

Gruver’s Division I prospect and junior guard Bailey Maupin was unstoppable against the Mustangs racking up 23 of her 28 points in the first half. Panhandle and Tarleton State signee Mason Jones ignited the Ettes with 25 points against Farwell.

Gruver and Panhandle’s highly anticipated clash in the regional quarterfinals is set for 6 p.m. Thursday in Pampa. The Lady Hounds knocked the Ettes out of the postseason a year ago in the Region I-2A final, 34-27, on the way to winning the UIL Class 2A state championship.

Wellington was also in action Monday, defeating Vega, 53-33, advancing into the regional quarterfinal round for a third straight year. The No. 15-ranked Lady Skyrockets (21-5) will play Tuesday’s Clarendon-New Deal winner Friday.

Kyla Kane finished with 19 points against Vega, teammate Sicily Sumrall added 12.
