It couldn’t have been written any better for Amarillo High outside hitter Currie Marusak.

Marusak celebrated Senior night in stellar fashion during the Lady Sandies sweep of Palo Duro, 25-10, 25-8, 25-6, by setting a new single season kill record surpassing her mentor and close friend Emerson Solano.

Solano, an Amarillo High and Texas Tech volleyball graduate, held the record of 557 kills since 2016.

Sitting only two kills behind Solano entering Tuesday’s District 3-5A match, Marusak wasted no time knocking down three kills in the Lady Sandies first five points giving Marusak the new record of 560.

“I always go to my favorite Bible verse of Joshua 1:9,” Marusak said. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Emerson is someone I’ve always admired. She’s always been a close friend, and is family to me. It was an honor to break her record and something I’ve aimed to do since I was a freshman.”

Marusak, a four-year starter and leader of the Lady Sandies, finished the night with 10 kills, six digs, and three blocks.

Even more good news for Marusak and her team, not only did AHS (28-11) stay unbeaten in district at 6-0, but the Lady Sandies clinched a Class 5A playoff spot in the process.

An eye-opening note, the storied AHS program has never missed the volleyball playoffs in 53 years as a program.

Tuesday’s highlights

Randall and Tascosa was the highlight match out of District 3-5A on Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders were able to make it a season sweep of the Lady Rebels nabbing a four-set, 25-20, 25-19, 25-27, 25-11, victory at the THS Activity Center.

Paris Patterson had an unbelievable performance for Randall, as the senior hammered down a game-high 20 kills with 16 digs for a double-double. Sophomore Jordyn Gove also earned a double-double to compliment Patterson racking up 15 digs and 12 kills.

Randall stays a game back of Amarillo High in the District race at 5-1, and improves to 22-13 overall. Tascosa falls to 22-15 overall, and 3-3 in league play.

The No. 2-ranked Hereford Lady Whitefaces clinched a Class 4A playoff spot on Tuesday.

Hereford took the season series from rival Canyon thanks to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-16, sweep at home.

The Lady Whitefaces are closing in on a 40-win season, moving to 38-2 overall, and a perfect 6-0 in District 4-4A.

Senior middle blocker Taytum Stow led the way with 15 kills, six blocks, and two aces against the Lady Eagles. Canyon (14-21) stays in third place in the district at 2-4.

Last but not least, the Vega Lady Longhorns earned the program’s first ever victory in thrilling fashion by escaping Memphis in a, 25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 25-14, 19-17, five-set win on Tuesday.
