High School Volleyball Bi-district roundup – Amarillo High advances, Bushland keeps impressive streak alive, West Plains gets first playoff win

Class 5A

Amarillo High advances past Abilene Cooper

Amarillo High is the only District 3-5A team left standing after the opening night of the UIL Class 5A playoffs on Tuesday night.

The Lady Sandies dominated Abilene Cooper 25-13, 27-25, 25-18, in a bi-district match at Lubbock Estacado. Amarillo High (32-9) advances to the area round where it will now face El Paso Jefferson.

Outside hitter Sienna Cavalier led the effort in the win over Abilene Cooper (17-20). Cavalier finished the night with a game-high 16 kills and nine digs. Teammate Jo Moffitt handed out 36 assists with seven digs and an ace, while Ryan Pennington made eight kills with eight digs.

Class 4A

District 4-4A stands strong

District 4-4A had a strong showing in the opening round of the playoffs with three teams moving on. Randall, Hereford, and West Plains all picked up wins to advance to the area round.

Randall had no problems in its bi-district match downing Pecos 25-10, 25-8, 25-13.

Jordyn Gove racked up 17 digs with 13 kills for a double-double. Teammate Sidney Soria also landed a double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs as Kandree Perez added eight kills with four digs and three blocks. The Lady Raiders (34-8) advance to the area round to take on Fabens.

West Plains won its first ever gold ball in program history thanks to a sweep of Midland Greenwood 25-15, 25-13, 25-9, in a bi-district matchup.

The sister combination of Zenaida and Cecilia Murillo had massive games each finishing with double-doubles. Zanaida handed out 16 assists to go with 10 digs, while Cecilia registered 13 assists with 10 digs.

The Lady Wolves (32-8) move on to face Clint in the area round.

Hereford rolled in its opening round playoff match dominating Seminole 25-6, 25-11, 25-14, on Monday night at Lubbock-Cooper.

London Baker gets better by the game and was terrific once again for the Lady Whitefaces handing out 31 assists to go with nine digs on defense. Autumn Wilburn had a solid outing adding nine kills with three blocks in the sweep.

Hereford (34-8) advances to the area round to take on El Paso Irvin.

Class 3A

Bushland cruises over Littlefield 

As expected, the two-time defending state champion Bushland Lady Falcons are off to a fast start to the 2022 UIL Class 3A playoffs. The No. 1-ranked Lady Falcons eased past Littlefield in the bi-district round with a 25-8, 25-5, 25-11, victory on Tuesday night in Tulia.

Bushland (36-4) extends its playoff win streak to 15 straight matches and will now play Crane in the area round.

The Lady Falcons totaled 34 kills on the night against Littlefield with Madyson Eberly leading the way with nine kills followed by Kaela Neie’s eight kills. Logan Culpepper handed out 15 assists and Kenzie Sims dished out 13, while Jada Permenter hit the floor for 19 digs and added a game-high six aces.

Class 2A 

Highland Park, West Texas High stand tall

Highland Park made quick work of Post with a convincing sweep 25-4, 25-12, 25-10, in a Class 2A bi-district round match at Plainview High School on Monday.

The Lady Hornets, who were the District 1-2A champions, are now 33-7 overall and will battle Colorado City in the area round.

Kyra Courtemanche played big at the net powering down 12 kills and served up three aces. Teammate Mercedes Harton showed off her versatility with 23 assists, 11 digs for a double-double, adding seven kills, five aces and a pair of blocks.

West Texas High continues its season by holding off Olton in five-sets 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 15-7 at the Caprock Activity Center during a Class 2A bi-district matchup on Monday.

The Lady Comanches moved the ball around well behind McKenna Jennings who had a double-double with 16 assists with 10 digs. Addison Lindley led the way with 20 assists, and Zoe Smith did her part on the defensive side hitting the floor for an eye-opening 32 digs.

WT High (15-16) advances to the Class 2A area round to face Sterling City.
