Yvonne Legarette, Friona cross country, Jr.
On the course: Legarette put a stamp on a fantastic season by finding the medal stand at the UIL Class 3A State Cross Country Meet held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Saturday. Making her third appearance in as many years, the junior ran her way to a bronze medal clocking a time of 12:12.1 to earn third place overall just 11 seconds behind state champion Addsion Hite of Pilot Point. Legarette has improved each year at the state meet taking eighth place as a freshman, followed by a sixth-place finish as a sophomore. Legarette is a three-time district champion, after claiming the District 3-3A title this season with a 12:28. She also came in second overall at the Region I-3A meet in Lubbock with a silver medal time of 12:30.1.
Coach Jamie Rejino: “It has been amazing to watch Yvonne grow and get better every single year. She has matured as a person and athlete and works so hard. She always knows when it is time to show up and rise to the occasion and compete. She’ll do anything asked of her, she always does her best and never complains. I just love watching her run.”
Legarette: “Being able to get on the medal stand mean a lot to me. I always watched my older siblings run and my brother get on the medal stand when he ran, so I wanted to live up their legacy and fulfill the dreams they wanted to accomplish. I felt like the state race was one of my best of the year. I was pushing and fighting the entire time. Even when I finished I felt like I could have kept going.”
