Girls Area Roundup: Gruver dominates Olton, Canadian cruises past Littlefield

Class 2A Area

No. 1 Gruver dominates Olton to stay unbeaten

Gruver backed up its No. 1-ranking once again in a dominating way absolutely dismantling Olton 78-22 during a Class 2A Area round game at the Caprock Activity Center on Tuesday night.

The Lady Hounds run their perfect record to an impressive 28-0 on the season, while Olton finishes at 14-19.

Gruver is all set to clash in a much awaited contest with No. 9-ranked Panhandle (27-8) in the regional quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Dumas. This is a rematch of last year’s third round where the Ettes beat the Lady Hounds 58-43 in Pampa.

Texas Tech signee, Bailey Maupin, set the tone early for Gruver against Olton scoring 12 of her 20 points in the first half. For a second straight outing, Lady Hound junior, Kimber Whitehead, had a stellar shooting performance scoring 20 points to go with Maupin. Brenna Butler added 16, followed by senior Camryn Armes with 12.

Panhandle pummels Lockney

The No. 9-ranked Panhandle Ettes will head to the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinals for a seventh straight season.

Panhandle had no issues taking down Lockney in an area matchup 71-34 on Thursday night at the Joe Lombard Gymnasium in Canyon.

Panhandle (27-8) is now set to face No. 1 Gruver (28-0) in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s third round game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Dumas.

Thursday’s game was never close. The Ettes jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter lead, pushing the advantage to 42-16 by halftime. Panhandle used strong defense and balanced scoring to earn the victory. Kate Kuehler put up a game-high 17 points for Panhndle, followed by Grace Sims with 15. Teammates Sydney Adee and Kandlin Ford each had 13, and Leah Sherwood tallied 10.

Lockney ends its year at 24-9.

Lady Skyrockets blast past Farwell

Wellington took another step forward toward forward a deep playoff run taking out Farwell 58-39 in a Class 2A Area round matchup at Randall High School on Thursday night.

West Texas A&M signee, Kyla Kane, was a mismatch for Farwell leading all scorers pouring in 22 points. Teammate Asia Shrubbs gave the No. 10-ranked Lady Skyrockets an extra boost to put them over top chipping in 13 points.

It was a tight contest after the first quarter, but Wellington pulled away thanks to 19-9 second quarter run to take a 30-19 lead into halftime. Once the Lady Skyrockets gained a comfortable advantage, they were able to keep Farwell at arm’s length the remainder of the night.

Wellington (27-7) advances to the regional quarterfinals for a fourth straight year, and will now await Friday’s Clarendon-Bovina winner.

Farwell ends a great season at 28-6.

Class 3A Area

Top-ranked Canadian routs Littlefield

Canadian continued to live up to its No. 1 ranking, taking control of the game in the first half and not letting up to rout Littlefield 58-31 at Bushland, setting up a big region quarterfinal showdown next week.

The Lady Wildcats (33-1) will face No. 7 Shallowater (30-2) next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Caprock. Shallowater advanced by beating Muleshoe 78-32 on Thursday.

Just like against Abernathy in the bidistrict round, Canadian wasn’t seriously threatened by Littlefield (22-11). They put the clamps on defensively in taking a 36-9 halftime lead.

Briley Merket led the Lady Wildcats with a game-high 19 points. The senior also achieved a special milestone going over 1,000 points for her career in the victory. Senior teammate Mattie Boyd added 18. Madison McNeese led Littlefield with 12 points.

Bushland crushes Denver City

Bushland didn’t waste much time against Denver City, taking a big early lead and coasting to a 62-25 victory at Floydada to advance to the region quarterfinals next week.

Unlike their bidistrict win over Childress, the Lady Falcons (24-7) didn’t struggle early offensively against Denver City (15-20), taking a 20-6 lead in the first quarter. Emma Troxell got untracked early this time, scoring six points in the first quarter as Bushland never looked back, giving up only two points in the third quarter to take a 35-8 halftime lead.

Ellie Frye led Bushland with 14 points while Charley Spinks came off the bench to score 12 and Troxell finished with 11. The Lady Falcons will play the winner of Friday’s game between Brownfield and Idalou next week.

Class 4A Area

Dumas falls to Seminole

The Dumas Demonettes season came to an end at the hands of Seminole 88-41 in an Area round clash on Thursday night in Plainview.

Dumas, which won its first playoff game in six years when the Demonettes beat Lubbock Estacado 42-41 on Monday, finishes the season at 21-13 overall.

Sheda Madit scored a team-high 12 points for Dumas.

Seminole’s Londyn Shain led all scorers with 24 points.

The Maidens (24-4) advance to the regional quarterfinals to face Friday’s Big Spring-Mountain View winner.
