On the hardwood: The West Texas A&M signee put on a dominant performance over Thanksgiving weekend leading the Canadian Lady Cats to the small school division championship of the Fantasy of Lights Tournament in Wichita Falls.

Canadian went 4-0 in that tournament beating Vernon 73-42, Breckenridge 35-17, Haskell 53-31, and Anson in the championship game, 36-30 on Saturday night. Over those four victories, the powerful post averaged 18.5 points a contest, including a game-high 26 points against Anson. Boyd also pulled down 7.5 rebounds a game in the tournament.

Boyd and the Canadian Lady Cats are off to a 9-0 start to the year.

Coach Aaron Marks: “Mattie had a great tournament over the weekend. She scored points for us, but she also was a major contributor rebounding, passing the ball, and most importantly playing defense. She just did it all. I think what makes her so good is not only her physical style of play, but Mattie is one of those rare players that plays with her back to the basket. You don’t see that as much anymore, and that gives her such an advantage. She’s just been a complete player, and her leadership is equally impressive. The good thing is as a team we aren’t near where we want to be yet. We have a lot to improve on.”

Boyd: “We weren’t playing our best over weekend, but we started getting it going. By the second game we got a little better, and by Saturday we finally started looking more like ourselves. Right now I feel I’m still trying to figure out my position. I’m playing a new role outside of my power forward position. Coach (Aaron) Marks has put me in a guard role sometimes, and I’m starting to learn that. I’m handling the ball more and developing my skill a little better.”
