On the diamond: In a key two-game District 3-5A series against Amarillo High, Ramos came up big to end the week as Randall stayed in first place in the district. After winning at Amarillo High the day before, Ramos got the call to start on the mound at Randall. Ramos got off to a rough start, walking a batter and hitting another before giving up a three-run home run to Will Franklin. The Raiders trailed by four runs before Ramos got them on the board with a two-run double in the bottom of the second. That led to them tying the game before the inning ended, and in the next inning, Ramos duplicated the feat with another two-run double to give the Raiders the lead for good, as they went on to a 16-9 victory. Ramos added another run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and pitched four innings to pick up the win. Randall ended the week 8-1 in district and led Plainview by a game atop the standings.

Coach Cory Hamilton: “As a freshman he really had a good year in terms of pitching, playing defense and hitting. He’s just a really good all-around baseball player. There’s always those questions. I knew he was probably a varsity player, but I’ve really been surprised as far as him stepping up and becoming an everyday guy with a spot in the lineup. It’s a good problem to have with a lot of pitching depth. For him to fit in that mix there really isn’t a whole lot of pressure if you have a lot of guys around you. He’s hit everywhere from 3 to 4 to 5 to 9. It’s a really good lineup, especially on a day he’s pitching to focus on pitching and then he’ll get an AB later in the game.”

Ramos: “It was a fun game. I was really happy with the overall performance of the day. It was not just me. I was really happy that we were able to get the win as a team. (The home run) kind of pumped me up both on the mound and at the plate. It gave me more energy to hit the ball. As soon as the momentum comes on our side it just stays because we have a whole bunch of athletes on our team. Everybody on our team does their job. I’d say wherever you put me I’m going to do my job no matter what, if it’s to get a bunt, a sac fly or a base hit. I’m actually really happy with everything I’ve accomplished this year, but I’m more happy with the team.”
