Elks dominate McCamey for area round victory

It was another dominating night for the Stratford Elks, scoring early and often for a 67-14 thumping of McCamey in a Class 2A Division II area round game at PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field in Lubbock on Thursday night.

The Elks wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard on the Badgers scoring on five of their first nine plays from scrimmage to take a comfortable 34-0 a minute into the second quarter.

Stratford has now won 10 in a row, moving to 11-1 on the season, and will await the winner of district rival Gruver (7-4) and Van Horn (5-6). Those two teams square of at 7 p.m. Friday night at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth.

Slot back Iuden Romero had another stellar night for the Elks. Romero broke loose on a 26-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game, followed by a 40-yard touchdown reception off a double reverse pass from quarterback Walker McBryde. Romero carried the ball only four times for 130 yards with two rushing scores, along with the receiving TD.

McBryde gave a near flawless performance going 8 of 10 for 188 yards with three touchdown passes. Two of those scoring plays went to Cody Rinne. Both of Rinne’s catches were for touchdowns, combining of 71 yards.

The Elks defense stifled the Badgers (4-8) to 152 total yards.
