PAMPA— Their standing in District 3-4A Division I and in the 2021 playoffs was already secure, but the Dumas Demons made sure their half-decade district championship legacy stayed intact at Harvester Field on Friday night.

In fact, it stayed perfect.

Dumas was vying for a fifth straight unbeaten district season in the regular season finale against Pampa and the Demons knew that no matter what they had already sewn up the district’s No. 1 playoff seed. By the end of their 48-21 rout of the Harvesters, they were once again kings of their district and no one has been able to touch them since 2016.

With the win over Pampa, the Demons (7-2, 3-0 in district) won their 19th straight district game and fifth straight unbeaten district title. Since taking over from older brother Chad in 2018, Aaron Dunnam has yet to lose in 12 district games as head coach of the Demons.

“It’s definitely a big deal,” Dunnam said. “Our kids care about it, our program cares about it, but for the majority of the folks it was just another district ballgame. We needed to win as we try to get steam and run into the playoffs. That’s special.”

The game fairly typified how Dumas has dominated the district, regardless of who the other teams have been. There was a balanced offensive attack and a defense which made plays when it counted and bounced back after some setbacks.

That was tested right off the bat, as Pampa (6-4, 0-3) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to strike first, but Dumas was in control the rest of the way, scoring on the next three possessions to take a 20-7 halftime lead.

The Harvesters came out inspired for Senior Night, marching the ball smartly down the field for a 75-yard scoring drive to open the game. Sam Anguiano hit Jordan Lacy on a 29-yard scoring pass to give Pampa a 7-0 lead, the first of two scoring passes for which they were responsible.

On the first Dumas possession of the game, the Harvesters had the Demons in a third-and-22. But Dumas got out of it in the most explosive way possible, as Brayden Boggs-Rushing hit Juan Romero streaking deep past the Pampa secondary for a 72-yard scoring pass to make it 7-6.

“Pampa’s got a lot of really talented kids offensive kids on their side of the football,” Dunnam said. “You’ve just got to weather the storm which our kids did, and our offense came back and answered, which was huge.”

The play hinted at the offensive firepower the Demons possess, as they had 483 yards on the night. Boggs-Rushing was just one of the offensive stars for Dumas, as he completed 12-of-21 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns.

But Boggs-Rushing thought that Romero’s return to the lineup was as big a motivation as anything.

“Juan’s been out all season with an ACL injury, so that right there set the tone for the game,” Boggs-Rushing said. “After getting scored on early it was really tough and we were kind of on our heels, but that score set us up for the rest of the game. Everyone was hyped we had the momentum.”

Romero had three catches for 111 yards.

After Romero’s score, the Demons took advantage of short fields to get into the end zone on their next two possessions. They took over at the Pampa 31-yard line after a short punt, setting up an 8-yard scoring run by James Bednorz to give them a 14-7 lead.

On Pampa’s next possession, Anguiano hit Lacy to apparently put the Harvesters into Dumas territory, but Lacy fumbled and the Demons recovered at their own 46. Boggs-Rushing ended the drive with a 2-yard run to make it 20-7 late in the first quarter.

Pampa, meanwhile, never got much going offensively after the initial score. The Harvesters were almost nonexistent offensively after Anguiano left in the game in the second quarter, limping off the field to not return the rest of the half, although he came back after halftime.

Dumas got the second half kickoff an returned it to the Pampa 26, and two plays later Bednorz scored on a 13-yard run to make it 28-7. Pampa responded with a 36-yard scoring pass from Anguiano to Lacy (who had five catches for 130 yards), but the Demons effectively put the game away when Boggs-Rushing hit Bednorz on a screen pass and he took it 83 yards for a score to make it 35-14.

“We knew it was going to be a battle coming in,” Boggs-Rushing said. “We knew there were going to be moments of adversity and there were. We knew we had to be real disciplined and not fall for any eye candy.”

Bednorz ran for 147 yards on 19 carries.

Dumas will face Decatur next week in the bidistrict round of the playoffs. Pampa, the district’s fourth seed, will play Wichita Falls Hirschi.

Canyon routs Hereford for district’s No. 2 seed

The Canyon Eagles decisively grabbed the No. 2 seed in the district at Happy State Bank Stadium, jumping out to an early lead on Hereford and never letting up for a 40-16 victory.

Canyon (8-2, 2-1 in district) took a 16-0 lead in the first quarter en route to taking a 26-8 first quarter lead, which included a safety. Dario Bressler, who ran for 143 yards on 28 carries, ran for two touchdowns for the Eagles.

It was a balanced attack for Canyon, as Derrek Clements threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores went to Parker Cunningham, who had nine catches for 126 yards.

For Hereford (6-4, 1-2), Gerardo Garcia threw a pair of scoring passes to Braedyn Mendoza.

Perryton crushes Borger to claim district’s No. 3 seed

Perryton took a big early lead on Borger and cruised the rest of the way for a 41-7 victory which gave the Rangers the district’s No. 3 seed.

The Rangers (3-7, 2-2) took a 21-0 first quarter lead and were in control from there. Abraham Hernandez threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter and in between, Cuyler Feger returned an interception 46 yards for a score.

Hernandez threw three scoring passes while Isaias Dominguez ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Borger finished the regular season 3-7 and 1-3 and will be the district’s No. 4 seed.

Tascosa falls to Lubbock Coronado in regular season finale

What looked to be a coronation of an unbeaten district season and first outright possession of a district crown in 33 years turned into something the Tascosa Rebels would like to forget Thursday night.

But there’s not much time to do that.

The Rebels went to Lowrey Field to face Lubbock Coronado in hopes of finishing their District 2-5A Division I season undefeated and claiming the district’s No. 1 seed for the playoffs. Instead, they face a lot more questions when the playoffs start next week.

Coronado overcame two early big plays by Tascosa and scored 28 unanswered points which proved the impetus in handing the Rebels a 48-29 defeat. That created a three-way tie for the district crown between Tascosa (8-2, 5-1 in district), Coronado (6-4, 5-1) and Amarillo High.

The good news for the Rebels is that they will get a home game in the bidistrict round of the playoffs next week as they’ll host either El Paso Bel Air or El Paso El Dorado. But they’ll have to do so without quarterback B.T. Daniel, who broke his leg in the second quarter and is almost certainly out for the season.

Prior to Daniel’s injury, the Rebels appeared to be humming along toward their sixth straight district win. L’Travion Brown made two big pays early, returning an interception 60 yards for a score and running back a kickoff 95 yards for another touchdown to give Tascosa a 22-13 lead.

It was all Coronado after that, though, The Mustangs almost doubled up the Rebels on offense, outgaining them by a 422-210 yardage margin.

Coronado’s Antonio Malone ran for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and caught a touchdown pass. Jett Carroll threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score.

Major Everhart led Tascosa with 73 yards rushing and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Caprock rolls over Lubbock

Caprock tuned up for the playoffs by cruising to a decisive win over Lubbock High on the road, winning 52-20 to end the regular season with some momentum from two straight wins.

The Longhorns (4-5, 3-3 in district) will be the district’s No. 4 seed going into the postseason.

Caprock and Lubbock (1-9, 0-6) were tied 7-7 in the first quarter before Damon Carrasco scored on a 1-yard run to give the Longhorns a 14-7 lead they never relinquished. Carrasco had another big game for Caprock running the ball, finishing with 188 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

Hayden Ramirez also went over the century mark rushing for the Longhorns with 104 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries. Caprock ran for 328 yards.

Palo Duro falls to Monterey in OT

While Palo Duro and Lubbock Monterey were both playing out the string at Dick Bivins Stadium knowing they weren’t going to the playoffs, that didn’t mean they couldn’t still fans an exciting game.

Unfortunately for the home team Dons, it meant a disappointing ending to the season, as Monterey won 44-38 in overtime.

Palo Duro (5-5, 1-5) showed signs of progress under first-year coach Eric Mims this season and the Dons will return several players next season, including Kameron Brown, who scored two defensive touchdowns on a 40-yard interception return and a 60-yard fumble return.

Jayden Hibbler scored three touchdowns for Monterey (4-6, 2-4).

District 3-5A Division II

Randall crushed by Lubbock Cooper

It couldn’t have been any rougher of an ending to the regular season for the Randall Raiders against an unbeaten district champion.

Randall never got anything going offensively against powerful Lubbock Cooper, as the Pirates showed why they’re the district champions by rolling over the Raiders 48-0. The Raiders (5-5, 2-3 in district) finish the season reeling, as they’ve lost three in a row.

The good news is they’ll still make the playoffs as the district’s No. 3 seed by virtue of positive points after finishing in a three-way tie for third place with Wichita Falls and Abilene Wylie. Wylie was eliminated in the tiebreaker.

Cooper (9-1, 5-0) jumped on the Raiders to take a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates led 35-0 at halftime, making the final outcome a mere formality.

Kalen Stripling ran for two touchdowns for Cooper. Randall had only 158 yards of total offense, as Alex Lucero led the Raiders with 61 yards on 11 carries.
