Class 6A-5A roundup: Sandies stay hot, Randall wins; Lee out guns Tascosa

The Amarillo High Sandies have rolled through District 2-5A Division I so far and Friday afternoon was no exception at Dick Bivins Stadium.

One day after snow storm had postponed the Amarillo ISD rivalry game between Amarillo High and Caprock, the Sandies came out in blizzard force.

They continued their offensive barrage and by dominating Caprock from the start, rolling to a 45-13 victory.

With the win, Amarillo High moved to 6-2 overall and clinched a playoff spot at 4-0 in district.

The Sandies offense scored on their first three possessions in the first quarter with another balanced offensive performance en route to taking a 31-6 halftime lead.

Junior quarterback Will Maynard continued his stellar play, completing 15 of 25 for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Taevon Hood ran for 93 of of his game-high 105 yards in the first half.

Randall gets key district win

Randall picked up a clutch victory concerning its playoff hopes, downing Abilene Wylie 20-7 on Friday night at Bulldogs Stadium.

The Raiders have won two straight improving to 3-5 overall but more importantly 2-1 in District 3-5A Division II.

Wylie falls to 1-7, 1-2.

With the game tied 7-7 in the second quarter, Randall quarterback JaKobe Norman gave the Raiders the lead for good on a 42-yard touchdown strike to Michael Miller with 30 seconds remaining to half.

In the second half, the Randall defense stifled Wylie, and the offense added two key field goals by Juan Garcia.

Randall chewed up 242 yards on the ground led by Brayden Beck. Beck rushed for 156 yards on 26 carries.

The Raiders defense held the Bulldogs to 92 total yards, 33 of which were rushing.

Lee out scores Tascosa for big district win

District 2-6’A’s showdown gave fans plenty of fireworks at chilly Dick Bivins on Friday night.

Unfortunately for Tascosa, it wasn’t the type of show it wanted to see.

Midland Lee broke open a tight game midway through the third quarter, outscoring Tascosa 27-8 the rest of the way out for a 55-36 win.

No. 19-ranked Lee remains unbeaten at 8-0 overall and a perfect 3-0 in district.

Tascosa has now lost back-to-back games, falling to 5-3, 1-2.

Despite a strong offensive performance by Tascosa (5-3, 1-2), which saw it grind out 295 yards rushing and 371 yards overall, Lee was even more impressive. Lee racked up 514 yards of offense – 234 through the air and 280 rushing.

Lee was led by junior quarterback Mikey Serrano. Serrano completed 13 of 23 passes for 234 yards and three touchdown passes while also rushing 18 times for 177 yards and two more scores.

Tascosa senior quarterback Joseph Plunk put on quite a display of his own. Plunk was 2 of 5 for 76 yards and a TD pass, and he also carried the ball 24 times for 131 yards and four scoring gallops of his own.
