Legacy’s longest district rival, Odessa Permian came into Dick Bivins Stadium and erased a 12-point second half deficit scoring in the final two minutes to leave Tascosa stunned as the Panthers walked away with a 13-12 win on Friday night.
Unlike last week, the energy took time to build between these two hard-hitting teams who both relied heavily on their defenses in this matchup. Both had trouble getting the offenses going as the Rebels took a 6-0 lead into halftime off a Hudson Farris 33-yard touchdown pass to TJ Tillman. The Rebels then went up 12-0 on the opening play of the third quarter when Farris ran a play action and found a wide-open Kemauri Pinkard streaking wide open for a 75-yard pitch and catch. But that would do it for the Rebels offense as Permian started to chip away.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Mojo (3-0) answered on a Justyce Lara touchdown cutting the advantage to 12-7. After a Rebel punt where they didn’t move the ball, Permian went 88 yards in 4:30 minutes highlighted by a Lara 50-yard run then a Rodney Hall 5-yard pass to Ja’Quan Richardson for the go-ahead score with 1:30 to play giving Permian its only lead that held up for the game-winner.
Tascosa (2-1) had one final chance, but on the ensuing Permian kickoff, the Panthers recovered a pooch kick. Special teams doomed Tascosa most of the night with two missed extra-point attempts and the fatal pooch kick at the end.
Farris ended the game with 61 rushing yards and threw for 117 yards with two scores.
Permian’s Lara had 109 yards on the ground with a TD.
Amarillo High picks up first win in Midland
The Amarillo High Sandies made their second trip of the season to Midland on Thursday, and they came back home much happier than the first one, resulting in their first win of the season.
Amarillo High jumped out to an early lead and never let up in rolling to a 27-8 victory over Midland High. This came only 13 days after they opened the season with a 47-21 loss at Midland Legacy.
The Sandies (2-1) had given up 47 points to each of their first two opponents, but they set the tone with their defense against Midland. They recovered a fumble midway through the first quarter and scored on a 20-yard pass from Mason Graham to Connor Haelzle. Pius Vokes scored on a 39-yard run with 19 seconds to go in the quarter to give the Sandies a 14-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Graham threw a pair of scoring passes, hitting Vokes and Jameson Garcia for scores. Graham had a breakout game, completing 14-of-18 passes for 201 yards and running for 52 yards.
Palo Duro’s offense comes alive for first win over Estacado
After struggling on offense for two games at home to open the season, Palo Duro found a welcome change of scenery Friday night at Lubbock Estacado.
The scored a total of only 10 points in losing to crosstown rivals Tascosa and Caprock to open the season. But they got into gear at Estacado, as they scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to take the lead and beat Estacado 31-20 for their first win of the season.
Palo Duro (1-2) trailed 20-17 headed into the fourth quarter, but the Dons had already shown more offense than they had in their first two games combined. Kameron Brown ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, a 2-yarder to give PD the lead for good, and another 2-yarder with just over a minute left to clinch it.
Brown ran for three touchdowns, but Tre’sean Monroe led the Dons with 80 yards on 13 carries. Palo Duro had another solid game defensively, allowing Estacado (1-2) only 255 yards.
Class 4A
Dumas gets by Perryton
In a traditional nondistrict rivalry game, Dumas took a late lead over Perryton and stopped a two-point conversion with 56 seconds left to hold on for a 27-25 win at home.
Dumas (2-1) took a 27-19 lead with 3:12 remaining in the game when quarterback Emmanuel Ibanez scored on a 51-yard run and Victor Morales kicked the extra point.
Perryton (1-2) wasn’t bothered, though. The Rangers drove down the field and with less than a minute left, Julian Cervantes scored on a 3-yard run to make it 27-25. However, a two-point pass attempt by Cervantes fell incomplete, preserving the win for Dumas.
Ibanez led the Demons with 112 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Perryton’s Cervantes ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.
Randall crushes Snyder
Randall scored another lopsided win as the Raiders got their first win on the road this season, jumping out to a big early lead to rout Snyder 41-6, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.
The Raiders (2-1) took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They had what might have been their most balanced offensive performance of the season, running for 238 yards and throwing for 171 for 409 total yards.
Sophomore Dylan Ray broke out at running back running for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Quarterback Nathan White completed 12-of-17 for 171 yards and three touchdowns, and his favorite target was the versatile Nathan Baker, who had eight catchers for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Defense, though, has been the biggest constant for the Raiders through three weeks, as they’ve started out strong and gotten better there each week. The six points they gave up to Snyder (2-1) were a season low.
Borger routs Lamesa
Borger made a long road trip worth it, as the Bulldogs never let up using a huge third quarter to roll to a 44-8 win over Lamesa.
The Bulldogs (2-1) dominated offensively, putting up 547 total yards, yet led only 7-0 at halftime. Quarterback Tray Toliver got things started in the second half by running 67 yards for a touchdown, and by the end of the quarter they led 30-8 and were coasting to victory.
Toliver led the Bulldogs by running for 190 yards on only 11 carries. Donteh Bates added 167 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Lamesa fell to 0-3.
Shallowater runs by Hereford
Hereford’s defense continued to struggle, as Shallowater moved the ball at will and rolled over the Whitefaces 55-18, as Hereford has allowed over 50 points in all three games this season.
It was a close game in the first half as Hereford (0-3) trailed only 23-18 at halftime. Quarterback Carlos Duran threw three touchdown passes to Eric Alvarez in the first half, the second straight week the duo has hooked up for three scores in a game.
However, the Herd couldn’t score in the second half, as Shallowater (3-0) piled up 32 unanswered points to close out the game. The Mustangs had 462 total yards against Hereford.
