Dumas survives in epic fashion

Dumas made one of the more remarkable comebacks in Texas Panhandle postseason history, rallying from a 27-point deficit to stun upset minded Lake Worth 37-27 in a thrilling Class 4A Division I bidistrict contest at Leo Brittain Field Lions Stadium in Vernon.

It looked bleak, and like the No. 9 Demons were going home early in the first half. The Bullfrogs scored on three straight first quarter possessions leaving Dumas in a 20-0 hole. Lake Worth (6-5) tacked on another second quarter score for a 27-0 advantage at the 7:02 mark of the second quarter.

Fortunately for the Demons, they got on the board before half thanks to a James Bednorz 1-yard run. That swayed momentum into the second half where Dumas took the game completely over.

From that touchdown forward Dumas went on to score 37 unanswered points, leaving Lake Worth wondering what happened. Running back Bryan Mendoza and receiver Victor Chavez were pivotal during the Demons second half comeback. Chavez scored three second half touchdowns, including a 4-yard TD at the 11:56 mark of the fourth quarter to give Dumas its first lead, 30-27. Mendoza finished his career night with 174 yards on 17 carries. Chavez snagged five balls for 119 yards and a score.

The Demons (10-1) advances to the area round for a second straight year where they’ll face Andrews (8-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium in Plainview.

Note

Pampa fell to Decatur 49-28. The Harvesters end a solid season at 8-3.
