Randall gets by Estacado to advance
If this is the third round of the playoffs, then the Randall Raiders must still be playing.
In their first year competing in Class 4A Division I after dropping from Class 5A, the Raiders are keeping up their tradition of playing on Thanksgiving week. They took an early lead on Lubbock Estacado on Friday night and held on, cruising to a 27-14 victory in an area round playoff game at Happy State Bank Stadium.
Randall (9-3) will face Decatur in regional round either next Friday or Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
The Raiders took a 13-0 halftime lead as Amel Hadzisabic kicked two field goals and Riley Davis caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Nathan White. Davis accomplished the rare double of 100 yards rushing and receiving on the night, as he ran for 100 yards and had three catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Estacado (7-5) twice got to within six points in the second half, but both times the Raiders answered back, thanks to big plays by Davis. He caught a 31-yard scoring pass from White in the third quarter and capped the game with a 30-yard touchdown run.
White completed 11-of-15 passes for 193 yards.
Canyon falls to Brownwood
Canyon simply fell into too big of a hole, as Brownwood had a big second quarter and the Eagles never caught up in losing 31-10 at Midland to see their season end.
Brownwood took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter and that proved too much for Canyon (10-2).
The Eagles did threaten in the second half. They got on the board early in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Noah Sanchez to Jacob Burris, and Elijah Smothermon kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to cut it to 17-10.
But Brownwood (10-2) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put away the game.
The Eagles struggled offensively, putting up only 197 yards. Brownwood, meanwhile, successfully ran the ball on Canyon, as Konlyn Anderson and Ike Hall both ran for over 100 yards and two touchdowns.
