The highly anticipated District 3-3A Division II opener between top 10 Childress and Spearman lived up to the hype and then some.
After wild game that saw a trick plays, key penalties and even the lights going out in overtime for a few minutes, it was the No. 7 Lynx holding off No. 8 Childress 43-36 in an overtime thriller.
Spearman gets its first win against Childress in six years, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in district play.
The Bobcats fall to 3-1, 0–1.
The Lynx were seemingly in control up 36-20 early in the fourth but Childress came clawing back. Quarterback Collin Bishop found receiver Lamont Nickelberry on a 66-yard touchdown closing the gap at 36-29. On the ensuing possession, Spearman’s QB Jack Wilkerson went to punt but had it blocked right into the hands of Bobcats linebacker Avery Jamola who went 65-yards the other way to tie the game at 36 with under 8 min to play.
The Lynx finally pulled it out in overtime. Wilkerson scored on a 3-yard run, giving the Lynx their final lead at 43-36. Childress had one more shot facing a 4th and 2 at the 4-yard line, but Bishop was pressured and pass incomplete.
Wilkerson ended his night throwing for 189 yards with three touchdowns and rushing for two scores on 107 yards.
Division I prospect Brenen Thompson took a first quarter 53-yard screen pass to the house, and threw a 49-yard pass on a double reverse to Brayden Klafka in the second quarter.
Bishop did his best to carry Childress throwing for 276 yards with three TDs.
Spearman (5-0, 1-0) heads to Canadian for a showdown with the No. 1-ranked Wildcats (2-1, 0-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Highland Park breaks into win column
After a rough start to the season, Highland Park was able to put it all together for its first win of the year 46-44 against Tulia at home Friday night.
Highland Park is now 1-4 on the year but more importantly 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II. Tulia falls to 3-2, 0-1.
Highland Park jumped out to a huge 40-21 lead and was able to hang on for the win.
Highland Park quarterback Caden Thompson 11-of-17 passes 280 and 5 touchdowns. He also had 91 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Running back Jax Reese had 106 yards rushing on 10 carries, and three catches for 72 yards and 2 scores.
Tulia’s Hayden Montgomery had four catches for 138 yards and two TDs.
Highland Park moves on to face Childress (3-1, 0-1) at Bobcats Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday.
Tulia (3-2, 0-1) plays Dimmitt at home.

Friona blanks Dimmitt
Friona opened district play in fine fashion with a 56-0 shutout at Dimmitt on Friday night.
The Chieftains are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3-3A Division II. Dimmitt is 0-5, 0-1.
The Chieftains totaled 471 yards for the game. Junior running back Jacob Bautista made his presence known coming back from injury in a big way rushing for 123 yards on nine carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Bryan Chavira was a perfect 4-for-4 for 129 yards passing with two touchdowns. He also added 74 rushing.
Friona goes on a bye week this coming Friday.

River Road shuts out Fritch
River Road bounced back in a big way getting the bad taste out of its mouth from a loss at Lamesa with a shutout at Sanford-Fritch 47-0 at Eagles Stadium.
Senior Lance Welps played with a different energy carrying the ball 12 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns. Welps also threw for 50 yards adding another score.
Running back Elliot Brown had seven totes for 108 and two TD, as well as a 46-yard punt return for touchdown.

Dalhart dominates Borger
The Dalhart Golden Wolves have made it back-to-back wins after dismantling Borger 46-8 at Bulldogs Stadium on Friday night.
The Golden Wolves put up 409 yards of offense while limiting Borger to 179.
The majority of Dalhart’s yards came on the ground led by Brennan Lloyd’s 10 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. Xaviar Hammett added 47 yards finding the end zone three times.
Dalhart (3-2) will head into a bye. Borger (0-5) takes on Ulysses, Kan. at 7 p.m. Friday.

Panhandle routes Stratford
For the first time since 1987, Panhandle was able to secure a win against the Stratford Elks on Friday night and did with a lopsided 62-20 win at Panthers Stadium on Friday.
Stratford kept it close to start the game, trailing 7-6 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Then the Panther offense exploded scoring 48 points over the next two quarters. The Panhandle offense has a night to remember racking up 577 yards. Panther QB Wesley Jones couldn’t be stopped passing for 258 yards and three scores on 12-of-16 passing. The gunslinger added another 56 yards and a score on the ground. Sophomore sensation Landyn was stellar adding 10 carries for 166 yards and three house calls.
Panhandle (3-1) will face Eastland at 7 p.m. Friday in Post. The Elks (2-3) will host Dalhart (3-2).

Vega’s explodes against Bovina
The Vega Longhorns poured on the points in their 63-13 win over the Mustangs Friday night in Vega.
Ryan Grawunder did the damage for Vega going an efficient 8-of-11 with 212 yards in the air tacking on five touched passes. Running back Riley Tiemann was back from injury finding the end zone two times on two receptions for 88 yards in the contest. Picking up the ground game for Tiemann was Clay Gilter. Gilter was a force toting the rock nine times for 176 yards and two scores on the night, including an 85-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.
Vega (3-2) has a big test coming up as they head on the road to undefeated and No. 8 Clarendon (5-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. Bovina heads to a bye week.

Wheeler edges out Sunray
Wheeler’s ground and pound game worked to perfection Friday night as the Mustangs picked up a 19-9 win against Sunray 19-9 at Bobcats Stadium in Sunray.
It was all Sunray early as Tate Debord found the end zone on a breakaway 60 yard run to start the game, and the defense forced a safety on the ensuing drive.
But Wheeler battled back. After a scoreless first quarter, the Mustangs rallied off a 19-0 unanswered points to finish the game. The scoring was in thanks part to the new QB Hesston Marshall. The signal caller carries the ball 23 times for 195 yards and was 4-of-10 in the air for 117 yards and a score.
Wheeler (4-1) makes it three wins in a row and will look to extend that streak to four next week against Gruver (1-4).
Sunray (3-2) has lost its last two an will hope to bounce back against Shamrock (4-1).

Gruver gets first win
Gruver was able to get in the win column for the first time this year, while knocking Shamrock from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 26-16 victory at El Paso Field in Shamrock on Friday night.
Miscues plagued the Irish as Shamrock turned it over three times on the night. The Irish were able to keep it close, however only trailing 20-16 in the fourth quarter, but Gruver put the contest away on the success of running back Angel Gaspar. The seniors name was called for 23 carries scrapping out 75 yards and two scores for his team. Gaspar also led his team on the defensive end with four tackles in the game as well as a sack.

Booker edges out Memphis for first W
Booker did everything it needed to late in the contest to secure the program’s first victory of 2020, 37-30, against Memphis on Friday night.
Leading 31-30 late, the Kiowas were able to pull away from the Cyclones (3-2) when Ismael Jimenez scored from 4-yards out with 28 seconds left to make it 37-30.
Jimenez had a huge night in leading Booker to its first win. The speedster put up an eye-opening 339 yards on 36 carries 4 with four touchdowns, and added a punt return for a score.

Broncos beat up Quanah
Clarendon stayed undefeated with a consistence effort during a 30-19 victory at Quanah on Friday night.
The No. 8-ranked Broncos improve to 5-0 overall on the year.
Quarterback Brock Hatley went 5-for-11 for 122 yards passing and a touchdown. The Broncos chewed up yards with seven different touching football. Antwan Bassett had a game-high 44 yards on 12 carries.
Clarendon will get a test at home against Vega (3-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Wellington rallies past Jacksboro
Marc Ramirez punched in a third quarter touchdown that helped the Skyrockets get past Jacksboro in an 8-6 fight Friday night at Leo Brittain Field at Lions Stadium in Vernon.
The Jack Rabbits got on the board first when Baylor Laake broke loose on a 17-yard score putting Jacksoboro up 6-0 in the second quarter.
Wellington answered in the third when standout Ramirez found a hole turned on the jets and went 30 yards to tie the game, 6-6. Wellington sealed the win on the 2-point conversion run by Creighton Killian. This was a defensive slugfest with neither team gaining over 200 yards of offense.
Ramirez had a team-high 23 carries for 106 yards and Wellington’s only score.
The Skyrockets (5-0) take on Valley View at 7 p.m. Friday.
