Dalhart earns emotional victory over Spearman

On a very impactful night in Dalhart just a week after the school and community lost sophomore Yahir Cancino to a traumatic incident, the Golden Wolves football team was able to rise up in front of a packed house and come away with an emotional 43-35 win over Spearman on Friday.

Dalhart head coach Joey Read says this is one of the proudest moments of his career. Not because of the win itself, but how his team and his community came together for their fallen teammate.

“It was the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen,” Read said. “That was amazing to see. All the support for the Dalhart community has been tremendous during this time and we’re very grateful for that. This win meant so much to this team. Our players were playing for Yahir. We left the field teary eyed, and they felt they represented the young man the best they could.” I’ve never been proud.”

This game was a battle of two solid offenses. The Golden Wolves came out smoking to a 21-0 lead only to see the Lynx never go away battling throughout to keep the game close.

Read’s son Kyler, who was a very close friend of Yahir Cancino, played with a heavy heart but left everything he had on the field to make Cancino proud. Kyler dominated Spearman with his dual threat ability. Using his 6-foot-2 frame, Kyler ran the ball 18 times for 121 yards with two touchdowns, and when called upon completed 13-of-20 passes for 171 yards with three more scores. Kaden Crosby was a key weapon for Kyler in the win catching six passes for 83 yards with two touchdowns.

Spearman quarterback Carson Seaman did have 260 yards passing despite the loss.

Dalhart earns its first win of the season on a night where they needed it most. The Golden Wolves are now 1-1 overall. Spearman falls to 1-2.

Bushland jumped out to a 16-0 first quarter advantage highlighted by a Dawson Jaco 18-yard pass and catch to Austin Rider, and an Ivan Soto 8-yard TD run. The Falcons were in full control over Childress by halftime building the lead 30-0 off two more Jaco touchdown tosses. For a third straight outing the junior gunslinger was more than superb going 21-of-29 through the air for a career-high 364 yards with four TD passes. Breckan Reed led all receivers with six snags for 100 yards and a score. The Falcon offense couldn’t be stopped running up 522 total yards, as the Bushland defense swarmed once again making life difficult by holding the Bobcats to 174 total yards. Childress now falls to 1-2 overall on the year.

Canadian falls to Elk City in OT

Canadian suffered a second loss in as many weeks falling to a very powerful Elk City, Okla. team in heartbreaking fashion, 37-36, in overtime on Friday night.

Canadian led for most of the way until the Elks tied the game, 29-29, in the fourth quarter. The game headed to overtime where the Wildcats took a 36-29 advantage off a Camren Cavalier 10-yard touchdown run. However, Elk City answered right back in its overtime possession scoring on the third play when quarterback Austin Jones scored from 2-yards out. Elk City then went for the win on a 2-point conversion and got it on a Levy Owens run to give the Elks the victory.

The Wildcats had trouble slowing down Elk City’s monster flexbone attack. Owens mashed the Canadian defense for 126 yards on 28 carries. Cavalier played well in the loss for the Wildcats going 19-of-26 for 259 yards, adding 81 rushing yards with two scores.

Canadian is now 1-2 overall. Elk City moves to 3-0.

Muleshoe downs rival Friona

Muleshoe took care of Friona at home on Friday getting a 39-21 victory.

The Mules were able to jump out on the Chieftains 26-7 in the first half. Friona tried its best to rally cutting the advantage, 26-14, but could never get the deficit into single digits.

Kirvin had an unbelievable game completing 13-of-25 passes for 251 yards with four touchdowns, and also tucked it 16 times for 114 yards rushing with another TD. Irvin Torres was a mismatch on the outside for Muleshoe. The sure-handed receiver snagged six balls for 132 yards and hauled in three of Kirvin’s touchdown passes.

Sunray explodes past Dimmitt

In the battle of the Bobcats, Sunray had too much offensive firepower overwhelming Dimmitt 50-6 at home on Friday night.

Lujan picked a part the Dimmitt secondary early and often completing 30-of-40 passes for an eye-popping 402 yards with five passing touchdowns. Lujan also added another score on the ground totaling 43 yards rushing on five carries. Damian Baragan was the main target for Lujan in the victory. Shamrock wins shootout at Highland Park

In one of the wildest games of Week 3 across the Texas Panhandle, the Shamrock Irish won a crazy scoring 56-47 game over Highland Park on Friday night.

In a tale of two halves, the Irish were in complete control of this contest leading 22-7 after the first quarter and 36-13 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter Shamrock was still safe 48-25. Like they have all year the Hornets (0-3) never quit coming alive by scoring 22 fourth quarter points to make things interesting cutting a once 31-point deficit down to nine, however, Shamrock had built up too big of a lead for any kind of dramatic comeback.

Caden Peevey was the story for the Irish (2-1). The senior do-it-all player knifed through the Hornets defense for 202 yards on only 14 carries, averaging 14.4 yards per carry with four touchdowns. He also led the Irish on defense making a game-high 13 tackles from his linebacker position. Quarterback Kit Macina did his damage. Tulia escapes Sanford-Fritch upset bid

A late field goal propelled the Tulia Hornets past the Sanford-Fritch Eagles in a very competitive contest as the Hornets were able to survive the Eagles 11-8 on the road on Friday.

With the game close throughout, and tied, 8-8, with only 13 seconds to play, Tulia head coach Oscar Murga showed confidence in kicker Daniel Velasquez by letting him kick a 42-yarder that he delivered on that gave the Hornets the huge victory.

“It was a pretty kick,” Murga said. “What a team win. The guys played hard and I’m so proud of them getting this victory.”

The Tulia (2-1) defense was stingy all night holding Sanford-Fritch (0-3) to under 100 yards of total offense. The Hornets did put up 356 yards of offense but just had trouble putting the ball the endzone. Running back Damian Cedillo led all rushers carrying the ball 18 times for 110 yards with the teams only touchdown. Cedillo also made six catches for 88 yards.

Quarterback Alec Actkinson was able to beat the Roughnecks with his arm and his feet. Actkinson rushed it 12 times for 83 yards with a score and went 6-of-12 for 81 yards with two more touchdowns. Junior running back Corey Stancell did what he does best by torching the Sundown defense for 164 yards on 22 totes with three TDs.

Ashurst then gave Wheeler (1-2) its first win of the season when he took a quarterback draw in for the 2-point conversion as the Mustangs pulled it out, 24-22.
