Clarendon holds off Shamrock to stay unbeaten in district
In one of the better battles of Week 10 across the Texas Panhandle, Clarendon was able to leave Shamrock holding on for a 23-20 victory to keep the Broncos in the race for a district championship.
Clarendon has now won seven straight games moving to 7-2 overall and more importantly are 4-0 in District 2-2A Division II. Shamrock (6-3, 2-2) will play Memphis for the outright No. 3-seed next week.
Trailing 23-20 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, Shamrock quarterback Kit Macina missed open receiver Braxton Allen inside the Clarendon 20-yard on a fourth down turning the ball over to the Broncos who were able to run the clock out. Clarendon running back and Texas Tech commit Jmaury Davis put his team on his back. Davis was unstoppable with his size and speed carrying the ball 36 times piling up 235 yards with two touchdowns. Macina rushed for a team-high 102 yards for Shamrock with a pair of TDs.
Memphis clinches playoff berth
The Memphis Cyclones are headed to the Class 2A Division II playoffs thanks to a 16-6 victory over Wheeler on Friday night.
Memphis punches its ticket to the playoffs moving to 2-2 in District 2-2A Division and 5-4 overall. The Cyclones will take on Shamrock (6-3, 2-2) for the third-place spot next week.
Running back Austin Valle led the team with two touchdowns on 138 yards rushing 19 carries.
Wellington crushes Quanah
The only thing that went wrong for Wellington on Friday is the Skyrockets gave up their first touchdown in 17 quarters and the lone touchdown in the month of October.
Other than that, it was business as usual as the No. 3-ranked Skyrockets rolled over Quanah for a 56-8 victory.
Through four district games so far, Wellington (8-1, 4-0) has outscored its district opponents 120-8. The Skyrockets are now focused on a showdown with Clarendon (7-2, 4-0) for the outright district championship next week.
Running back Barrett Phillips carried the ball only four times but stacked up 85 yards with two touchdowns. Nixon Folk had only three carries for 42 yards with a pair of scores, as the Wellington defense limited Quanah to 94 total yards.
District 1-2A Division II
Sunray stays perfect in district
Sunray shook off a slow start to roll over Booker 48-20 to stay perfect in district play.
The Bobcats are 8-1 overall and 3-0 in District 1-2A Division I. Sunray is now setup for a showdown with Vega (5-4, 3-0) for the outright district championship next week.
Sunray stacked up 473 yards of offense behind quarterback Armando Lujan. One of the state’s leading passers was effective going 22-of-46 for 328 yards with four touchdowns despite two interceptions. Lujan also toted the rock for 102 yards two more scores. Lujan’s talented receivers benefited from his arm. Kagan Davis hauled in eight catches for 151 yards with a pair of TDs. Dawson Bennett snagged eight catches as well for 124 yards with two touchdowns.
Gruver is playoff bound
Gruver wrapped up its regular season with a bye coming next week by clinching a playoff berth thanks to holding off Boys Ranch 28-24 on the road on Friday night.
The Greyhounds end the regular season at 7-3 overall and will be the No. 3-seed out of District 1-2A Division II at 2-2. Boys Ranch (4-5 overall) falls to 0-3 in district but will have a winner take all game for the fourth and final playoff spot with Booker (4-4, 0-3) next week.
Gruver quarterback Mason Gibson had a solid performance going 17-of-28 for 199 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. Running back Ridge Holland tallied 144 yards on the ground on 18 carries with two scores.
District 1-2A Division I
Stratford, Panhandle, Farwell all win
As expected, Stratford, Panhandle and Farwell earned lopsided victories to stay atop the District 1-2A Division I race on Friday night.
Stratford ran its eye-opening win streak to 22 straight games with a 55-6 win over Highland Park. The Elks remain as the only unbeaten team standing in the Texas Panhandle at 9-0 overall and 4-0 in district. The Elks have clinched the district championship.
Maurcio Duran had eight carries for 107 yards with two touchdowns. Quarterback Bryce Braden went 4-of-4 for 111 yards with three passing touchdowns.
Panhandle stayed a game behind Stratford with a 72-0 blanking of Sanford-Fritch on Friday.
The Panthers are now 7-2 overall and 3-1 in district play. Fritch (1-8, 1-3) is still in playoff contention if the Eagles can beat Highland Park next week. Quarterback Landyn Hack was 8-of-12 through the air for 162 yards and five touchdowns. Hack also rushed for another score. Cooper Neil caught three of those passes for 93 yards and two TDs.
Farwell kept pace with Panhandle thanks to a 68-0 shutout over West Texas High at home.
Farwell (8-1 overall) is tied with the Panthers at 3-1 in District 1-2A Division I. Panhandle and Farwell meet up next week with the second-place spot on the line.
Quarterback Alec Atkinson threw for 161 yards with three touchdowns and ran for two more scores.
CLASS 3A
District 3-3A Division II
Canadian clinches share of district crown
The No. 4-ranked Canadian Wildcats gained a measure of revenge by dismantling Tulia 66-7 at Younger Field on Friday night.
Tulia had stunned Canadian, 54-35, a year ago, and the Wildcats didn’t forget that by getting the lopsided victory.
The Wildcats have now won five straight games moving to 7-2 overall and more importantly clinched a share of the District 3-3A Division II crown. Canadian can win the outright league title with a win over Dimmitt next week. It’d be the eighth district title over the past nine years for Canadian. Tulia (3-6, 1-3) still has a chance at the fourth and final playoff spot when the Hornets play at Spearman next week.
Canadian dominated on the ground chewing up 261 yards. Kaden Crooks tallied 79 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Teammate Luke Flowers added 52 yards on five carries with a pair of TDs. The Wildcat defense stifled Tulia to (-)37 yards rushing for the game.
Childress is back in the playoffs
Childress won its third straight game and also clinched a Class 3A Division II playoff berth by downing Dimmitt 63-0 on Friday night.
The victory also puts the Bobcats over .500 for the first time since Week 1, improving to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in District 3-3A Division II.
Childress running back Da’reon Mathis is riding momentum with his third straight 100-yard game rushing for 157 yards on only eight carries with two touchdowns. Teammate Lamont Nickleberry caught four passes for 134 yards and three TDs of his own.
Friona holds off Spearman
In a hard-fought slugfest, the Friona Chieftains were able to hold off Spearman in a key District 3-3A Division II contest with a 14-10 home victory.
Friona (5-4 overall) is playoff bound with the win moving to 3-1 in district. Spearman falls to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in district. The Lynx will have to beat Tulia next week to get the fourth and final playoff spot.
Maurio Batista had a strong night rushing for Friona chewing up 68 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Jose Saucedo was 8-of-15 for 78 yards including a 46-yard touchdown toss to Martin Godinez in the second quarter. Saucedo also ran for 48 yards with a TD.
Friona head coach Jimmy Arias inches closer to Chieftains history with the win as well. Arias won his 47th career game in eight seasons at the school to tie for most all-time with Tommy Moss.
District 2-3A Division I
Bushland bounces back
Bushland ended its regular season by bouncing back from a loss to Shallowater with a convincing 62-12 blowout at Dalhart on Friday night.
The Falcons, who have a bye week looming, end the regular season at 9-1 overall and 3-1 in district as they now get ready for the postseason.
Ivan Soto ran extremely well going for 124 yards on only 13 carries with a touchdown. Dawson Jaco delivered and then some going 18-of-24 for 257 yards with five touchdowns, and Tate Butcher hauled in six passes for 82 yards with a pair of scores.
Shallowater stayed a game ahead of Bushland thumping Muleshoe 48-20 on Friday night.
The Mustangs move to 3-0 in district and 8-1 overall. Muleshoe falls to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in district.
