West Plains Lady Wolves win Lubbock Kickoff Classic

What a start it’s been for the West Plains Lady Wolves in only their first year.

After a strong showing at the West Texas A&M Winter Freeze Tournament last weekend, the Lady Wolves turned their level of play up to go 4-0 and win the Class 4A Division of the Lubbock Kickoff Classic from Thursday to Saturday.

West Plains (9-1 overall) didn’t allow a goal the entire tournament and beat all four opponents by a combined score of 29-0. The Lady Wolves opened the tournament by blanking Lubbock Estacado 5-0, then took to El Paso Riverside 9-0, followed by a rout of Plainview 9-0. It was the second time over the week that West Plains had decimated the Lady Bulldogs after a 12-1 win last Tuesday. West Plains then claimed the championship trophy on Saturday by getting another shutout this time of the Frenship JV, 2-0.

Vanessa Baca had an outstanding performance scoring a total of four goals, including one against the Frenship JV. The junior added five assists over the four wins. Senior forward Sydney Lanigan had two hat-tricks racking up six total goals in victories against El Paso Riverside and Plainview. Teammate Melanie Lujan netted five goals in four games, Kathryn Torres totaled four assists and goalie Bella Hawley was key in the net making seven saves against the Frenship JV.
