Buff briefs: Weekend review from West Texas A&M athletics

WT volleyball stays hot

The Lady Buffs ran their win streak to four matches last Wednesday night sweeping past Eastern New Mexico to move to 10-2 overall, and 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

WT was led by Torrey Miller with 10 kills followed by Camy Jones with seven and Samantha Jordan with five. Sadie Snay dished out 14 assists while Hereford graduate Chandler Vogel had 13 digs in the back row. The Lady Buffs continue LSC play at St. Mary’s and St. Edward’s on Friday and Saturday.

WT cross country has solid showing

Florance Uwajeneza held her own against some of the top runners in the nation on Saturday morning at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic as the Lady Buffs finished 31st with 762 points led by the 15th place finish by Uwajeneza, who remains undefeated against NCAA Division II competition in her career. Innocent Murwanashyaka paced the men’s team, covering the 8-kilometer course in 23:53.8 to finish 18th overall and fourth among NCAA Division II runners.

Buffs soccer splits week

The No. 3-ranked Buffaloes handed Oklahoma Christian a 2-1 overtime loss on Wednesday night in Canyon as Sean Ryan scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute to move WT to 7-0-0 for the best start to a season in program history. The Buffs unbeaten ways didn’t last long, however, as WT fell to St. Mary’s on Saturday night in San Antonio as the Rattlers used a pair of second half scores to take the 3-2 win.

WT returns to action at Lubbock Christian on Saturday.

WT women’s soccer keeps on winning

The Lady Buffs got back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon at The Pitch in Canyon as Emily Avila scored twice including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 85th minute for the 3-2 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce.

WT (6-2, 2-1) travels to UT Tyler for an LSC matchup Saturday.

Buffs hosts Ryan Palmer Invitational

The Buffs host the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Amarillo Country Club. The WT lineup will consist of Pablo Rebolleda, Eemeli Jarvinen, Daniel Unger, Kolton Baber and Caden Conrad while Mitchell Downing and Connor Kurysh will play as individuals.

Lady Buffs host WT Fall Invitational

The #17 Lady Buffs also return home this week to host the WT Fall Invitational at Tascosa Golf Club. Head Coach Meredith Jameson plays a lineup of Rylie Cook, Gam Songprasert, Alyssa Campbell, Alexis Escobedo and Antonella Omisolo Periotti in WT’s second tournament of the fall.
