On the course: It was a dominant outing for the Tascosa golf team in last week’s District 3-5A tournament at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex, and Holmes was the biggest symbol of that. Playing in windy conditions, Holmes was tied for the individual lead at the end of the first round with a respectable 75. Holmes then kicked it up another notch in the second round, outpacing the field with a 73 to finish at four-over par 148, beating teammate Ethan Evans by four shots. That proved the dominance of Tascosa over two days, as eight of the top 10 individual medalists wore red and black. Not only did Tascosa’s “A” team advance to the Region I-5A tournament at Lubbock’s Rawls Golf Course on April 19-20 with a score of 616, Tascosa’s “B” team also will go to region after finishing second with a 643. Holmes has lived up to his role, as he’s been Tascosa’s number one player all season.

Coach Trey Scales: “He’s been our number one guy for pretty much the entire year. He’s new to us but we knew he was going to be a strong part of the team. He came in and really meshed with the guys and his play just matched what I expected it to be for district, especially day two shooting that 73. It was a great score for the windy conditions. His emotional level is one of the steadiest I’ve ever seen. He doesn’t get worked up or super excited. He misses a green, he’s going through the process to get it up and down. His strength is his short game. You put a wedge and a putter in his hand you know you’re going to get an up and down from him. He just processes the game well.”

Holmes: “It was really, really windy the second day so I was happy with 73. I didn’t play great the first day but I was able to stay in it mentally. I was just staying focused on the process and not letting my head get too big and ending up on top. I ended up driving the ball really well and I hit my irons pretty good too. It was mainly my ball striking both days. I worked a lot with coach Scales on hitting the ball lower in the wind and not letting yourself get out of it mentally when the conditions get hard. I’ve got to stay on the grind and make sure to give it the best shot I have. The consistent amount of work you put in gives you the best shot to win tournaments. I’ve really tried to focus on not getting mad and staying in it for every shot.”
