Amarillo High sweeps AISD Invitational; Dimmitt boys, Gruver girls impress

It was a jam packed day of runners and fans at the Amarillo Invitational at Thompson Park on Saturday morning.

The annual AISD meet showcased over 1,003 runners from across the Texas Panhandle.

Division I

In the large school Division the Amarillo High boys and girls made it a clean sweep in the team results. The Sandies finished with 39 points, holding off second place Canyon, which had 52. The Sandies top runner, Branch Cox, placed second individually with a time of 17:81.81 in the 5K race.

Canyon’s Sam Ashley was the winner by pacing a 17:17.26.

On the girls side, AHS dominated with a total of 27 points. Cammie Mitchell led the Lady Sandies impressive effort with a time of 21:31.45.

Randall’s Ariyah Gomez placed second, clocking a 21:13.86. Gomez and the Lady Raiders took silver as a team.

Lubbock Cooper’s Cammie Jenkins was the individual champion, boasting a 20:25.81.

Division II

The Dimmitt boys scored 57 points to win the small school varsity title. Jordan Garcia, the individual champion, was a big reason why Dimmitt won, running an 18:05.12.

In girls action, Gruver wins without placing a single individual in the top five. The Lady Hounds scored 70 points to dominate the meet, beating second place Tulia (130) by 60 points.

Individually, Tulia’s Alex Trammell was the winner of the 3200 meter run, with a time of 13:33.99.

Individuals: 1. Cammie Jenkins, Cooper, 20:25.61; 2. Ariyah Gomez, Randall, 21:13.86; 3. Cammie Mitchell, Amarillo High, 21:31.45; 4. Brooke Latham, Amarillo High, 21:38.46; 5. Courtney Latham, Amarillo High, 21.54.40.
